Royal Purple (community allowing oil changes)

My community now allows oil changes. This being said, I may once again use Royal Purple after many years of conventionals and 3700 mi oci's (short because of turbos). It works out financially because at Walmart prices for RP and extending oci to Hyundai maximum 5k mi, is more cost effective than the dealership/quick lube prices for conventional oil changes ($38 x 5/year vs $34 x 3), not to mention they charge $70 for synthetic changes. Even if many on BITOG believe RP its overpriced, the car I used it on showed exceptionally clean when changing to high performance cams.

Yep, RP oils are definitely good. RP is good well past 5k.

I believe Amazon still has the deal for 5qt + RP filter right now, which is an excellent deal.

The RP off the shelf is not better than Pennzoil Ultra. It's overpriced for what it is..

The HPS formula is solid.. But idk the price. Never have looked as I can get Signature Series at a l cheaper price than the OTS RP.

Never dealt with a homeowners association? I own a townhouse and the homeowners covenant from the 70s doesn't allow for motorcycle ownership or pickup trucks over 1/2 ton rating. It also doesn't allow owners to paint doors random colors or change door hardware to anything other than an antique brass finish. The cosmetic stuff is easy, but the vehicle ownership conditions are ignored.

Gated communities often have restrictions on residents working on their vehicles or turning their garages into workshops.

You don't mess with large HAs where you're basically anonymous. They've been known to foreclose for a couple of thousand dollars of missed dues payments and can issue fines for breaking rules. You can lose a house if you don't pay up.

Wow. I'm quite familiar with condo rules here in Canada as I own several that I rent out. Basically, their rules are toothless. Except missed condo payments as they are enforced thru the Ontario Municipal Board and get added to your taxes. I'd be interested to challenge some HOA rules. A close friend of mine owns a home in a south Fla gated community which I regularly visit and I've heard some of their rules are offside.

My mother thumbed her nose at her HOA when she put a new roof on her cluster home, and the president of the HOA was lucky not to have had the roofer put him in the hospital, since the average middle aged upper income office worker is not in as good a shape as the average roofer, and probably shouldn't try to get in the average roofer's face, as this guy thought he could do.
HOAs in most of this country are essentially toothless.
They can be ignored unless you do something that also violates a local ordinance or local zoning.
And no, I've never bought a house where a bunch of busybodies could pretend to tell me that I couldn't work on my cars.

I hope you are correct about this, as the forced faux elitism is RAMPANT around here, and in THIS townhouse community.
They (the Merc driving homeowners in this complex) just cannot believe, nor understand that NOT everyone is willing to (OR able to) GROSSLY over pay the stealerships for oil changes, or routine maintenance, or even major repairs for that matter.

Yeah, the Merc, BMW and Lexus driving wannabes who can barely afford the mortage payments on their homes and the lease payments on their cars.
I laugh at those who try to maintain an appearance they really can't afford.
HOA rules are a part of this schtick.
Me, I'd rather live in a house that's paid for and drive inexpensive cars I can pay cash for.
Maybe not as chic, but offering a whole lot more peace of mind than being enslaved to a collection of material goods.

Even if the HOA has a rule against oil changes I wouldn't mind it. In fact I think mine does, I'm not even sure. If they get mad at you they send a nasty letter and tell you to stop. I'll be long done with my oil change by then. (And the local Yuppies don't dare make comments to the guy with the camo hat changing the oil on the F350 listening to country music)

Ohhhhhh how I love my non HOA 12ish house neighborhood where every home is on 3+ acres. We turned down one house we liked on 3 acres due to the HOA's crazy rules. No trailers at all, no trucks over 1/2 ton, no tree removal without approval, no working on cars, absolutely can not do anything to the house INSIDE OR OUT without approval, all exterior changes have to be of a natural looking substrate such as cedar siding or stone etc etc etc.

Before we bought this house we were in my wife's condo where you couldn't do anything either. Any time it snowed I would bring my K2500 over with the plow and every time it would get a warning on it. So what did I do? Well I ignored it and I also drove right on out in a foot+ of snow while all the idiots in cars were watching and shoveling because they were dead stuck. I would have normally dropped the plow and made at least 1 path out for everybody but nope I made them wait for the contractors to come do it.

I would rather live off in the woods than to ever live in another HOA community. I understand some can not afford it so they are forced into condos and townhouses but man I sure do not miss those days.


Oh and IMO RP oil is nothing to write home about. I would rather run PU or amsoil myself.

RP may be overkill as would other full synthetic oils at this modest oci.

I don't have ANY neighbors(my driveway is 1,500' long)- no complaints about the height of my grass or how many cars are in the driveway. I have a lot of friends- I just don't want to live next to them...

And FYI, most HOA's CAN bind you by their terms. YOU were dumb enough to sign a legally binding contract when you moved in. How much money they want to spend on legal fee's to enforce it is going to be a different story everywhere though. Can you out-spend them in cout?

There are a lot of covenants that aren't legally enforceable - especially older ones that restrict ownership based on race. I read through mine when I bought my townhouse, and it contains restrictions on large pickup trucks and motorcycles. None are supposed to be stored long-term. However, I remember several motorcycles as well as large light-duty trucks. We have a small group and for the most part we're not out to destroy each other over things that are pretty much meaningless. It would also be nuts for the group to use our limited funds on an attorney to sue one of our own.
