Hi,
I'm from Singapore and this is my 1st UOA

Car: Oct 2003 Nissan Sentra
Engine: 1.6litre QG16DE
Car condition : Completely stock
Driving style: Gentle
Climate: Warm, typ 30 deg cel, rel humid 80-90%

Oil: Royal Purple 10W30
Oil in service: 3.5 months
Miles on Oil: 3977
Miles on engine: 9877
Oil capacity: 2.7 litre with filter change
Oil added: 0 litres
Oil filter: original nissan
Sampling method: mid-stream oil from drain plug
Lab: WearCheck, ALS chemex

Metals, ppm
------------
Aluminum, Al 4
Copper, Cu 9
Chromium, Cr Iron, Fe 8
Lead, Pb 15
Tin, Sn 1
Nickel, Ni
Contaminants/Additives, ppm
----------------------------
Silicon, Si 18
Boron, B 8
Sodium, Na 6
Potassium, K Phosphorus, P 1011
Molybdenum, Mo 109
Magnesium, Mg 26
Calcium, Ca 2287
Zinc, Zn 1217

Physical Test
-------------
TBN, D-2896 5.6
Water, % by FTIR Nitration, Abs 8.2
Vis, cSt@40deg 74.4
Glycol, Abs Petrol, % by dis 0.6

Sorry, the lab did their "standard" test for gasoline engines which didn't include oxidation, Vis@100deg or soot.

Any comments ? Thanks

Wear definately looks elevated but this engine could still be breaking in, I dont know. Oil capacity only 2.7L? Wow! That could be part of the reason. In contrast, I have an '03 Corolla 1.6 which needs 3.8L. Small oil sumps tend to be more stressful for the oil. The 18ppm of Si could be from leeching gaskets, but it could also be abrasive dirt (poor air filtration). Change your air filter just to be on the safe side. TBN of 5.6 shows the oil is still in good shape. And vis@40C of 74.4cSt is just about right on spec. Pity there's no vis@100C. Why is that? I've seen other ALS Chemex UOAs and they do give vis@100C, oxidation and soot. Did they charge you $80+gst? Your next UOA hopefully should show a drop in wear metals and silicon. If not, you might want to do a switch to Castrol SLX A3 to see if it lowers your wear.

Is this your first use of Royal Purple? Is this 10W-30 the API SL, GF-3 formulation?

The reason that I ask is that the signature of this oil does not match the RP 10W-30 formulation that we have in the U.S. The Ca, P and Zn numbers are high, and there should be no B and very little Mn. There is either a lot of carry-over from the previous oil, the accuracy of the lab is suspect, or both.

Below is a VOA of RP 10W-30 that I had done. The additive levels were consistent through the five analysis that I had done on this oil.

Here's a VOA on Royal Purple 10W-30, SL GF-3 formulation, done by BlackStone.

Yes, perhaps another Royal Purple user that should be using a better oil. Like me and others, using this oil doesn't give the results we were hoping it would. Have you thought about, or fcan you use, Mobil-1? Good Luck.

The UOA you did on Royal Purple with 1 1/2 quarts Valvoline make up oil won't produce very significant results in anything. Adding Valvoline to Royal Purple is like adding Iced Tea to Crown Royal. JMO

Hi Ken4,

Thanks for your comments and advice. This is my first time using RP 10W30. Previous was mineral from car dealer.

Will change the air filter. Mechanic used air gun to clean it during servicing, quite a lot of dust came out.

I was also surprised read on the car manual that engine uses only 2.7l of oil even with oil change. I know Honda city uses 3.5l w filter change, comparable to your corolla.

After seeing ES's report, I also thought vis@100deg was included. I paid SG$60+gst, spoke to Amy from ALS Chemex, she told that this "standard" package doesn't include vis@100deg. Do you normally send your oil to them ?

How much is the castrol xls a3 ? I got RP from mxtrading.com at SG$9.75 per quart.

Thanks.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your advice.

Yep, this is my first use of RP 10W30, previous oil was unknown mineral, ??W??, from car dealer. According to the RP bottle label, it's API SL, GF-3, with the "Energy conserving" label and "API certified for Gasoline engines" starbust label.
http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseInfo2.asp?LicenseNo=0777

My results seem to match another RP10W30 report from singapore in terms of additives:

http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001370#000000

But I think he's also using the same lab as I am.

I tried to send my oil to blackstone, but the mailman just wouldn't accept it, he said "can't send oil ... flammable and we don't do liquids"

Not a good idea. Air filters are cheap, just replace it.

Thanks, will change it asap.

Thought about using M1 but it cost about US$12+ per litre in singapore. RP cost US$6 ... so decided to give RP a try, cos I can do 2 RP oil changes for 1 M1 change.

But the following article says that frequent oil changes are not good:

I've never used ALS Chemex, I send mine to Terry Dyson. I have no problems with the post office. I label my package: Engine oil sample for analysis, non-flammable, non-harzardous, non-toxic, and no commercial value. I have been questioned by the postal worker once, but I told her I've sent these many times with no problems, so she said okay. I know other friends in SG that have sent samples to Terry with no problems. Here is some advice given by blackstone:

p.s. I buy my Castrol SLX A3 from Forkliftparts Enterprise @ $77 + free gift.

Guess I have to go to another post office, I tried to explain to the lady for at least 10 min that the oil is non-flamable, non-toxic ... blah blah ... and even showed her the blackstone letter but she just wouldn't budge ...
frown.gif

Do you just send the bottle from Blackstone or you put it in an envelope ?

Strange that you have never used ALS, Amy from there seems to know you, she mentioned your name when I spoke to her.

Thanks for the castrol info.

I'm no expert but the lead and Iron should be the other way around. If you haven't dumped it yet I would and change the Air filter. I would think about AMSOIL,M1 or GC. If you like a blend try SCHAEFFER oil.

Hi,

Ken is not wrong. I have sent my oil sample to Terry Dyson through the EMS at the local post office. They were okay with it. I should have my UOA on RP10W30 in about 5 months' time. Then we can compare notes.

Cheers

Hi,

Are your mileage in KM or in Miles? Just curious.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info, I do not doubt Ken, it's just my luck I guess
wink.gif
Anyway, next time I will go to another PO and tell them it's been done before.

I hope the wear nos. drop in my next UOA I do (from 20k-30k km), that should be also about 5 months time, then we can compare.

If wear is still elevated, I would consider moving to an ACEA A3 oil like castrol slx. Has anyone you know tried the Triple-R 5W40 sold at Carrefour? (made by http://www.tetrosyl.com/ ) SG$40 for 5 litres is pretty cheap and it's an ACEA A3 compliant oil.
