Which should I get what's the difference

Note that it’s an approval, not a “spec”. Do both oils have actual VW 508 00 approval? If they do, then there will be no noticeable difference in operation. That’s what an approval gets you.

They each offer an officially approved oil.

Much as this place would love for you to obsess over it I doubt there is one whit worth of difference.

Go with cost and ease of purchase. As already mentioned approval is approval here. LM 5qt bottles are really nice.

I fail to see how a company's decision to sell additive products in addition to their oil creates an issue? Clearly this is a profit center for them.

To me it's similar to M1 selling all the different lines of oils - nobody needs anything beyond regular ol' M1 but we have: High Mileage. Extended. Extended High Mileage. Advanced Fuel Economy. Hybrid. Why all the different blends that nobody will likely show do a thing beyond the normal M1? Is it...marketing and profit-driven? Sure it is.
