Amboy,Ca is a little "town" out on the desert. The sign there is popular with route 66 travelers.

Unfortunately we were here in the daytime so it was not lit up.

They sell gas there and snacks.

There is also an extinct volcano about 5 miles away from Amboy.

I love the retro look of places like this out in the southwest! We used to live in Mesa, Arizona and have seen so much of the southwest. My wife was a native of Southern California.
When we went on our southwest road trip last Summer, my son fell in love with it. He was born in Arkansas, so he never experienced it like my daughter did. He came to love the fascination of Route 66 as well as the beautiful, yet unforgiving, environment of the region. As @CKN mentions, there’s a lot of open space out there.
If it weren’t for our ties here, my wife and I would be back out there. 👍🍻

Tks. for the photos. That's such a different world from here on the coast of NC. This country has an enormous amount of geographical diversity. BTW, your gas prices there are equally stunning.

Cool. It's interesting to see areas with long dead ancient volcanoes. Most people including myself don't think of North America having alot of volcanoes. I always thinknof Hawaii or Java. Is there a hiking trail or tour guides of the volcano area?

I like that whole stretch of Rt. 66. I've been there a few times - as recently as a couple weeks ago (for the east end from Needles to Essex).
West of Essex the road is blocked at some point but I was in Amboy as recently as 2016...

I had that picture as the background on my work computer for a few years.
