blackstone comments: typical wear for this engine type with 4900 miles
engine appears in good shape with this kind of wear pattern in its used oil.
trace fuel is not a problem and the viscosity was in spec for this oil type.
it looks like this 1.8l could handle ~7000 miles next fill of oil.

Looks like a nice run. I would stick closer to 6,000 miles.

Insolubles very low.......:)

What kind of use did it see? City, Hwy, hot weather, cold weather?

about 60\30 city\highway over the past 4 months. this car has an automatic. oil filter was a toyota filter.

With only 5206 miles and the TBN already down to 1.8, Rotella 10W30 is almost spent, I would not run this oil in this engine with this driving conditions more than 6k miles

Purportedly RT10w30 CJ ia a stronger oil than the engine needs. But surprised at lowish TBN from this application at 5K OCI, Now I'm worried about going 7.5K with my subaru, as RT10w30cj is the current fill. The dipstick wipe towel smells like 'sweaty underwear' at 4600mi. Odd.

That means you've sniffed.............DUDE!

It looks like it did its job here. I mean for the price vs. performance I don't know if you can complain that much. It appeared to control wear quite well. Your FP looks pretty low I'd say fuel is what whacked your TBN.

Very good results for the interval. Just disappointing that a quality HDEO can't do more than about 6k...I'd expect 7.5k to be a minimum the oil should survive...

1.8 TBN? An hdeo that can't go 4 months--5000 miles in a 06 Corolla and end up with a decent TBN?

Try something else. IMO

Its not "spec'd" for a 5w its just the recommended grade for fuel economy. The manual recommends a higher grade for severe sevice, stating the the the fuel economy grade will not provide "adequate" protection in towing and high speed highway or high ambient temps. We are lucky to get a HDEO with no Mg component in a 10w30. This is a good all round HD oil. Tractors, perf engines, mowers, Yaris ... No need for 5w in the summer. W = winter.

The TBN starts out at a healthy 10.x according to the spec sheet.

I suspect that the 60% city driving makes the 5k really a 7k+

I was going to joke that the low insolubles were due to hard deposit formation since it's the lowest reading I've ever seen ..ever.

While Amsoil allows the used of the EaO on either the 1ZZ-FE or 2ZZ-GE, they only recommend it for the OEM duration.

The wear is not the issue; TBN is.

I personally think something is amis with the TBN result.

I've seen this oil have better TBN retention in other equipment, including diesel engines with longer runs. I personally run this oil in both gas and diesel engines.

Me too! If a PSD doesn't chew this oil down to size, I can't imagine a Corolla doing it. YNK, however. This report is otherwise so good that the TBN sticks out like a sore thumb. Might be worth following up with Blackstone. At least a followup test at the next OCI with an emphasis to Blackstone to make sure the TBN is right. Can't complain about the wear metals or insolubles.

I tried to run the OP's "toyota" filter (thailand mfg Denso) on my car and it would not pass enough oil to tension my timing chain. Suspected a bad batch got to my supplier with over resined media. Tried the filter (90915YZZf2) a YEAR later and had the same problem - TC grinding on startup and run. Out came the filter, away went the problem. I'm still befuddled.

Had the same problem (years earlier) with the filter on my Suzuki Aerio 2.3L - turns out to be the SAME filter, Suzuki issued a TSB on this filter - cant find it in my archives though ...

On second thought, I think the type of use is more like ninety percent city driving with an occational twenty or thirty mile run on the highway, a suburban commuter vehicle. The low TBN was my only concern, I was expecting more. The current fill and filter is the same as last time. I'll post the next one too.
