I am currently using M1 0w40. Have had no problems other than the 1 quart that vanishes every 4000 miles. I think it is this reason my Car is throwing a code for Catalytic efficiency below threshold on BOTH banks so..

Im wanting to reduce the oil consumption but stay in the 40 weight because the car is driven in texas, hot climate year round especially in summer. A/C is never off.

Would I be OK switching to Rotella? I have read that the Diesel oil's high additives isnt so good the cats. Is this right?

The M1 10w40 meets the a3/b3, a3/b4 and API SM SL.
(doing research on what this actually means) lol

But i noticed the "audi approved" 0w-40 has met the same requirements while the other M1 oils did not.

Which would I be safe with? should I switch over to t6 or stay with M1 but switch to 10w-40?

Car will have 110k when i do the oil change.

M1 0w-40 and Rotella T6 have about the same amount of anti-wear additives, with Rotella T6 being slightly higher on the ZDDP, perhaps.

You can get catalyst efficiency below threshold via bad O2 sensors as well, I think. It's probably worth your while to fix the problem.

If I lived in Texas and had a vehicle where oil consumption were a concern (1 quart per 4000 miles is nothing) I'd use Rotella T 15w-40.

I doubt you'll notice any reduction in consumption with T6 or with M1 10-40. Any of those oils are perfectly fine for your 2.8.

There is a VagCom catalytic converter test you can run to see if your cat is fouled vs. O2 sensors.

A quart every 4000 miles isn't that bad, even when it's at 0w-40 prices.

There are some drivers on this board that would love to have your level of consumption!

I went with Rotella T6. Hopefully the diesel oil does my engine good. Lots of the s4 2.7t owners also said they used rotella in their cars with 5k intervals. I will probably be use it for 6k maybe 6.5k since i dont have turbos to worry about like they do.

Audi's are known for hardening valve guide seals....which tend to increase consumption of oil...or the 2 turbo's (K03's?)might have some wear in their bushings...or combination of both!

I've used all three oils in my G35 6MT, and the lowest consumption was using Mobil 1 0W-40, about 6K mi/quart. YMMV. Good luck.
