Has anyone been monitoring Shells Rotella T HDEO's? I hear they are due for a change in 2009. The latest VOA was 2007 dated CJ-4 and it tested lower than the 1200ppm. Any thoughts, I've got a classic Olds that I need to feed ZDDP and would rather not use all of my SLOB up so soon.

There's been some confusion on the used oil analysis and VOA section regarding whether we're talking about SL/CI or SM/CJ rated oil. They changed the bottle design BEFORE going to SM/CJ, so some folks have been assuming that new bottle = SM/CJ. Not true.

Anyway, when I last dug through some used oil analysis to sort it out, it appeared to me that the only significant change was the calcium/magnesium ratio, with the newer oil having much more magnesium and less calcium. ZDDP dropped little, if any and IIRC was still in the 1100-1400 range. If your cam is already broken in I wouldn't worry as long as you're over 800-1000 PPM ZDDP, unless you're running enormous valve springs.

For what its worth, my next used oil analysis on the Jeep will be on SM/CJ RTS, and I'll be sending it in around late August or early September, if the miles rack up as expected. I'll post it here.

Found a VOA out there that showed higher zinc that the a CI-4 sample. And why would Shell admit to lower ZDDP levels and lose the sales. Many fleet operators are refusing to use CJ-4 oils not limiting there drain intervals. Allot of these HDEO's ran for 30,000 miles between drains, which high ZDDP allowed.
