Stop being a whiny neighbor with nothing better to do, its one morning out of your life, wake up and take advantage of it. I deal with crying neighbors all the time, by ignoring them. Last guy that cried about noise I told him to stop bother me and call the cops, never did. Cops will either tell you to stop working or give you a [censored] fine, which I rather pay for my roofer than risk him getting heat stroke.

If they really get annoying I set up the gas compressor and usuualy generator on their side. At precisely 7AM of course.

It gets hot in the summer, they have to start early. Ever roofed before?

Meh.. With four kids, the noise never stops for me. The noise of a roof tear-off and re-do sounds good!

This kind of attitude is disrespectful. If I came to you with an honest request and you gave me lip in return, you'd be the one calling the police. I'd expect no different if the shoe was on the other foot.

I'm currently putting a new roof on my own house..in Central Tx. Talk about HOT! I've been working in the evenings until dark (9:30p) and still come off the roof soaked through. I'm fixing to switch to early morning hrs. Roofing is brutal work, particularly in the heat.

Get some ear plugs or ear phones.

Why would that be a difference (unless you work Sat but not Sun).

Seriously, you can do the letter and newspaper and calling cops all you want but it is only one day, and you probably would do the same if you are the roofer working in the summer heat.

They probably want to get done and get off the roof before the mid day sun or maybe storms were predicted for later in the day, its only 40 min early.

Go ahead and complain but what goes around comes around and you probably wont like it, people have long memories.

+1. Cut the poor guys working on the roof a break, it's hot, brutal work in Summer.

I was on my roof yesterday afternoon about 3:00 P.M. working on some antennas and solar panels. It was so hot I had to wear leather work gloves to prevent burns to my hands.

Ambient air temp on the ground was about 107 F. It was probably 130 F up on the roof.

I don't have respect for anyone who bothers me, or my guys working. Neighbors like to cry because they usually have nothing better to do, well I do, and listening to them isn't one of them.

You would throw a punch at me for that? Good luck, Mr. aggressive.

6:20AM half the morning is gone I would be up their at 5:00AM setting up many people that [censored] never put a roof on in their life and are clueless.

The appopriate thing to do would have been to address at the time. The likely case is the roofer would hold off for 40 mins.

Just an FYI-I'm often out mowing at 6:00 AM when it's really hot, just so I don't have to mow or bush hog in the 95+ heat and high humidity.

ummmm....who's being childish and selfish?

Most areas have noise regulations for construction and construction-type activities. In my neighborhood it's 7:00AM-10:00PM on the weekdays, 9:00PM to 10:00PM on the weekends. I follow the rules as a courtesy to others, even if it's inconvenient for me personally. I'd expect others to do the same, even if it's hot outside...

If you really feel your health is being threatened, then don't engage in the activity.

Id tend to agree. I have no doubt that rooftop work stinks bigtime in the summer heat, but to disrespect the neighborhood, its ordinances and the neighbors is just horrible.

To think that one's business is more important than unsuspecting people in the adjacent lots is really a sense of entitlement too.

Two options though - 1, if the houses are far spread apart, say 3/4+ acre lots, its likely no big deal, and 2, if the person getting the work done asked the neighbors if it was OK to do this for a short time, and they said it was OK, then its a different story...

I worked nights the last time we had a roof put on. The roofers would show up at 6 a.m which was right about the time my head hit the pillow. That was a LONG week. I was ready for them to be done and/or Friday to get there. This was in early April which is still relatively pleasant here even though it can get pretty hot.

I wish roofing was as "cheap" as it was then. My jaw hit the floor on an estimate on the house we live in now.

We're getting a new fire station here, and there were guys putting a metal roof on today in the 106 degree heat!

Agreed. How hard is it? My neighbor was having her house re-roofed and the guy came over to let me know he was going to be making some noise early on the weekend. Sure, no big deal. There's nothing wrong with common courtesy.

Might be nice if they would warn the neighbors, but on the other hand I wouldn't complain about starting 40 minutes early. Around here they start at the crack of daylight. Sorry but I think I'd have better things to be complaining about. Of course though I guess you could complain and the roofer could start at 8 and stop at say at 11 and come back a couple of days later and work on it some more. After all you wouldn't want anybody to lose any beauty sleep.

What if you have an infant that sleeps lightly and when it wakes up, it cries a lot? What if you worked night shifts and were trying to get to sleep around that time? Would that have any bearing? Or should everyone just grin and bear it?

The infink is irrelevant. We all need to have a roof over our heads. A baby is usually a responsibility one chooses to take on by choice. It is not a burden to shove on to any and every other person you meet. Exception: in the ghetto.

I worked third shift for several years and to tell the truth I kind of got to where there was little that bothered me. Is all the contractors suppose to not do any work then because you work nights? When we had the babies they seemed to have their own way of ruining your sleep anyway. So yes grin and bear it.

Yes, you are right. 100% right.
But this is really minor.

Give the guys a break - they want to get as much done in a day as possible, esp with roofing. And more so on hot days.
Good roofers are done in a day or two, anyway.

If the roofers started work 40 minutes later like they're "supposed to," how would that solve any of those problems?

what if you worked a night shift that finished 20 minutes later on that day due to the faucalt analyser at work playing up and needing tinkering, and even 'though the bloke started on the scheduled time, you were 20 mins late home and hadn't time to start on your bed-time preparedness ?

It's a once off, they are not building a new development around the OP, and those sorts of things are the things that neighbours let neighbours do...in a community of course.

If you want to get bent about an early start on a single roof that will last the next 3,000 to 10,000 days into the future without an early start on replacement, better be also worried about all the styes being shown from the home ground.
