OK, I know it is summmer... and I know it gets hot on roofs.

But to be banging around on a roof, in the middle of a residential neighborhood at 6:20 on a Saturday morning?

Plus... the roof that they were replacing was on the primary residence of a city council member, who should *know* that there's a noise ordinance that prohibits such noise prior to 7am.

I'm really tempted to send Mr. City Council member a letter, asking him what gives...?

Fair?

I think so. Nothing will happen, but it feels good.

Send the letter, with a copy to the local paper.

You should have called the cops. Of course the probably wouldn't get there until after 7.

I'm thinking that it will be pretty awkward when I show up at the next City Council meeting and ask a question about the noise ordinance, and inquire if it is acceptable to have, as a completely random example, a roofing contractor working at 6:20am on a Saturday morning...?

Unless you have an axe to grind, I really do not see the point in pursuing this.

Besides, if you were the one getting your roof done, wouldn't you want the contractor starting as early as possible in the morning?

If I were a roofer, I would run the risk of working a cold morning and [censored] a few people off.

Worst case scenario you get slapped on the wrist, better than heatstroke.

Not before 7am, and of all people, a City Council member should be well aware of the existence of a noise ordinance.

This is Illinois. It can't get much worse than it is now.

the people That make the laws are exempt. you should know this by now

I bet there is text in the ordinance that allows the public works director or zoning director to authorize work to begin earlier during times of extreme heat or for emergency work. I bet there could be a form on file Monday morning if you were to make a fuss. You know you can't fight city hall.

Think of those poor buggers on the roof.
They probably want to get done and get off the roof before the mid day sun or maybe storms were predicted for later in the day, its only 40 min early.

Go ahead and complain but what goes around comes around and you probably wont like it, people have long memories.

Don't get mad; get even.

My former neighbour was doing some DIY noisy work at a similarly inconvenient hour. I decided the next night to warm up the Cummins powered motorhome with the exhaust stacks pointed at his house for a couple hours starting at 3:00 a.m.

How childish and selfish. You'd rather the workers were on the roof in the heat of the day rather than start early and knock off early-before the heat becomes dangerous?

Just an FYI-I'm often out mowing at 6:00 AM when it's really hot, just so I don't have to mow or bush hog in the 95+ heat and high humidity. My safety (and the safety of those workers on the roof) trumps your inability to get out of bed on a Saturday morning. I'm glad that I don't live near anyone selfish enough to whine about someone getting work done early on an extremely hot day.

What incredibly immature responses.

Too bad. He had been doing renovations at inappropriate hours for the better part of three years. He could have built a new house in that period of time. New doors for a while, then he worked on windows for a month, then a roof. Then, he was dealing with siding. Next, he's throwing sinks and bathroom plumbing out the window, which, of course, is really quiet. Right. And these weren't all "hot days" or anything like that, either. That's aside from the fact he filled the dumpster with construction materials, in direct violation of city bylaws. An idling diesel is a much smaller hassle than a big fine and a bill for the extra dump of garbage, plus the chance that the city would ensure his permits were in order and his work was up to code.

He's lucky I didn't turn the motorhome the other way and lean on the air horn instead.

Exactly. I have been one of those poor buggers on the roof and I know just how miserable it can be to roof in the heat. It is very common around here from say June - late September for roofers to start as early as possible when heat and/or storms are predicted. It is not uncommon for them to be on the roof anytime from 5:30 on. Even weekends.

Actually, it gets to a point you literally can't be on the roof any longer. The roof gets so hot it can burn your feet right through shoes/boots and when the roofing gets that hot it can be damaged by walking on it anyway.

We always tried our best to keep the noise down but the job has to get done and that means doing it when it can be done. I am not going to suffer heat stroke just because it is a Saturday. As long as the sun is up and it is daylight we would start work.

7:00 would have been a little better but.. Being a contractor who on occasion works outside the earlier I start in the hot weather the better. Having said that I've never started before 7:00 on a weekday, or 7:30 on a Saturday.
