I went to wash my compass today and found a 5mm by 5mm rock chip in the hood that went down to bare metal. What is the best process to repair this. What I thinking is clean the area with acetone or similar product, touch up paint in three coats applied by brush. Tape the area off and wet sand it with 1500 grit sand paper then clear coat the surrounding area. Just need to find a places to get touch up paint in my color code. Any suggestions..

Well, I bought my paint from www.paintscratch.com. When the supplies come in I will post photos of the process and hope it turns out alright. There is a dent the size of a quarter and the paint is chipping out farther than it was. Planning on chipping the paint out to the edge of the chip and repainting the area. The plan is to lay down two light layers of primer, two-three layers of top coat, (letting paint dry for 24 hrs between layers) tape the small area of, and use some rubbing compound to get everything level. Then a layer of fresh clear only to the effected area.
Good Luck, I have never had any success in getting chips to look anywhere near the original paint job. decided to live with this as a fact of driving on roads with tons of debris on them as well as construction trucks that never clean off dirt and material when leaving a construction site and tractor trailers throwing up everything in their wake. Touching up rock chips is hard. Yours especially sounds huge!
Given the size of your rock chip, it sounds like your paint was not properly done. Normally only the contacting area of tip/point of the rock should leave a chip, but if THAT much of an area chipped away, your paint could be very sensitive to impacts.
Given the above, you may get even more rock chips.
My front bumper has a million small ones, I tried touching them all up and gave up. I tried sanding down the blob of touch up paint, but ended up burning the clear coat of the paint to the side of the chip.
It was OK though because I intended to repaint my front anyway, and ended up doing that. Sadly, I now have even more rock chips again.

Touch it up to prevent rust, but don't waste any more effort into it or you'll just stress yourself out
