Viscous center diff means that when the speed of each wheel changes from the others, the coupler slips and locks up (special fluid that changes viscosity with heat)....do that for several hundred miles at a very high heat, and you get bad things happening. It is known for autocross cars to blow up their diffs from even 2-3 seasons from running different tire sizes or air pressures that affect the tire height. Very important for viscous center-diff equipped Subarus (not all of them have them).
Good news-- does not require trans removal, just service plate off of the rear. Hurray!!!

Lost a diff because a tire was low ? Talk about an absurd failure.
Another that I saw this last winter on a friend's Subaru, but certainly not limited to one, was when we had a fair amount of snow, it slushed up, and then it froze pretty good. This resulted in blocks of frozen slush in the wheel wells around the tires, and the limited clearance prevented him from being able to clear it. He had to wait for it to thaw.

Yes. $107.20 plane ticket, $65 hotel room, 5 trips to the gas station and a few quarts of oil.....that's all I'm into this car for. I traded a brand-new sticker set of race tires for all of the Subaru parts picked up last night, and I guess I did spend $58 in misc parts at the dealer today...so either way, I'm still happy with what I have.
One transmission in Corpus Christi is $100, another one in Florida that is free + $150 freight, so that's also not that bad. I have a free spare motor getting torn down at a friend's garage as well, just in case.
