The HTHS for ALL the oils is 2.9?

The paper was comparing their Biosyn to conventional dino lubes?

How about Redline, Amsoil, RP or any of the Grp IIIs?

nope, it's >2.9

the 5W-40 is certainly robust enough to work better than any other oil on the street and on the track in an 8250 rpm 4.2L 420 HP V8 engine with low tension rings in Alusil cylinders, as verified by UOA at multiple mileages across two 5K mile OCIs.

The results in the previous posts have held for 5 different Audi RS4 engines at various mileages, starting with 600 miles, out to 28K miles. RLI HD SHP 5W-40 shows better real world UOA results for wear, fuel dilution, oxidation, nitration, and shear stability than the following oils:

Amsoil Euro 5W-40
Motul Etech 0W-40
Motul Xcess 5W-40
Motul V300 5W-40
Mobil 1 0W-40
Castrol Syntec 5W-40
Elf Excellium LDX 5W-40
Fuch GT1 5W-30 (Audi Factory Oil)
Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40

Castrol has the factory fill contract with VW and Audi. So unless Audi decided to go with a special factory fill oil just for the RS4, I'm pretty sure it came with Castrol in the crankcase.

It's possible that how an oil performs can not always be reduced to spec's. Writen specs are often out of date and it's possible that for liability reasons the levels of certain additives may be greater than required and substitutions may have been made. RI_RS4 is on the right track. If it’s broke, fixit.

UOA's on the factory fill are unlike any known commercial Castrol oil. Information from the UK has lead us to understand that at least for the RS4, Fuchs is the oil being used. The other candidate could possibly be Castrol Edge 5W-30, however, I am told that the additive package seen in UOA is different than Edge.

I agree with Lonnie on this. HTHS is one of those specs that has been "gamed" by the oil industry. Specification compliance for HTHS (say like in the Audi/VW specs that require an HTHS of 3.5) are measured on new oil, and not on oil that has passed their battery of torture tests. Oil formulators then add high temperature viscosity index improvers necessary to met this spec. Unfortunately, when the oil shears viscosity grades, it no long is close to meeting HTHS specs. So what we get are oils that perform really well when they are new, and then blow after a few thousand miles of real-world operation.

Gman, if you're able to decipher the Audi Factory Mystery Oil, it would be appreciated. Here's a UOA of it.

I agree that HTHS is not the be all-end all of specs, but if you are going to take the time to include it in your spec sheet, you might as well put in the real number.

Unless you are worried about being stolen from! Big fish eat smaller ones that taste good...:)

Terry, forgive my ignorance, but how is publishing accurate HTHS information giving away one's trade secrets? If they don't want you to know, just leave it off the PDS.

The "noacks" on all of these oils appear excessively high when compared to Amsoil, Redline, itc.

In reality, the oils perform exceptionally well with low oxidation and low consumption. I cannot fault the performance of the 5W-40. It does outperform Amsoil, Motul, Elf, Castrol, Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1 in my application.

Noack doesn't always seem to correlate to oil consumption, but does give some indication of base oils used.

I was told this by Bill G at RLI. He said that going too could cause problems but that it could be done. I'll ask him this week end for specifics. Right now they are in the middle of a storm and are having trouble with lightning and their communications.

I'm curious about the "Environmentaly Friendly" aspect. What is meant by Renewable and Biodegradable? When you drain the oil, it's recycled like other oils, right?
