RIP Bill Russell.

This one hurts. As a player, 11 championships is 13 seasons. As a man, a great leader and American.
Mr. Russell was from Oakland and figured to be a dock worker. Now the NBA Finals MVP Trophy bears his name.
Celtic #6 paved the way for leaders that came after him.

Yeah, the NBA was a lot different back then, fewer teams, etc.

But no other team came close. The Bill Russel led Celtics were in a different stratosphere than any other team of the time.

Back in those days the NBA had a very tiny presence on televised sports. Other sports like golf and bowling were televised more often than basketball. That might be hard to believe but it’s true. Football and baseball were the big sports.

When a game was on television it was usually a Celtics Or a Lakers game. In many cases it was the Celtics vs Lakers. Russell vs Chamberlain. The league was a lot smaller then.

I remember watching those Laker games. Wilt was a power to be reckoned with and when he went up against Russell it was something to behold.

After 1967 I didn’t watch as much.
