Moved into a new home about a month ago. There's no real crime in the area and the home is on a golf course. It has a hardwired Ademco Vista 20 panel and two of the doors and the downstairs windows have hardwired contacts. There are no motion detectors and the back door has no contact. Getting an alarm company to come in and reprogram the panel isn't cheap and they all want you to contract for monitoring.

For $240, I bought a Ring alarm system with 2 keypads, 6 contacts, 3 motion detectors and a range extender. I can self monitor via the Ring app on my phone and tablet and call the cops if I think its necessary.
Its a no brainer.

The only thing I have come across with self install sensors (mine are Samsung SmartThings) is some use hard to find batteries (not at Home Depot or Walmart) and some go through batteries rather quickly.

Yeah. I had the Smartthings hub and Dome sensors in our old house. It worked well but was far more complicated than it needed to be. The 2nd generation Ring uses AA batteries in the motion sensors and rechargeable LIon in the keypads. The contacts use 2032 button batteries... they are relatively inexpensive on Amazon.

In my case I use the Smartthings hub for about 10 water sensors that are in every bathroom and near every appliance that uses water. An RH sensor in crawl space detected the dehumidifier was not working properly. And an auto opener for garage door allows me to let in service people.

I had a Wink hub i our beach house to turn two Dome water shutoff in the crawlspace valves on or off each season.Wink essentially went belly up and than came back wanting a subscription. I threw it in thetrash and bought a Vera hub...which I don't believe uses cloud technology.
