One of the greatest if not the greatest of all time lead off men in MLB history has passed away from pneumonia…,Rickey took the lead off position to new heights with his tremendous speed, great athleticism and tremendous attention to his craft. 130 stolen bases in a single season is an amazing feat. He stole more than 100 3 times, 3,000 plus hits, scored more runs than Ty Cobb.

I remember watching Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken and thinking that these men are truly great, great players. You know when you watch certain athletes and even though you are a goofy young kid you know you are watching great players. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Jordan, Joe Montana, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Jack Nicklaus, Dale Earnhardt Sr all gave me that same type feeling.

He was the ultimate distraction while on base which did help his teammates while they were at bat. He stretched many singles into doubles as well. He had good power to from a short powerful compact bat swing. Rickey had a small strike zone due to his stance and stature while at the plate. That made pitching to him very difficult. I enjoyed watching Rickey because he was so focused on disruption of the other teams focus. And he could make stealing a base such a big part of the game.

He was a showman and definitely enjoyed his moments of doing things on the diamond. Which could be highly annoying to some.. . But hey even Dennis Eckersley was like that too. Both well, well deserving of being in the Hall of Fame.

Watched him play many times. Second base will never be the same.

I loved watching him play. That’s who I look up to when I think of a MLB player, not the trash players of today.

RIP.

The greatest A's player and the greatest leadoff man of all time. I was at game 4 of the Bay Bridge Series; Rickey hit a leadoff homer.
You may remember the series was postponed by the 7.0 Loma Prieta quake of '89.
You could talk with him before the game, but once the game started he put his SERIOUS game face on.

Yeah sure do. I remember Rickey stealing 8 or 9 bases in the ALCS against the BostonRed Sox. Which broke the old stolen base record… And that was in just 4 games Rickey did that. He dominated in that series too prior to the World Series.

The A’s had the best outfield in MLB for a few years with Rickey Henderson in left, Dwayne Murphy in center, and Tony Armas in right. Not quite sure what Armas is doing with all those fireplace matches. Seems a little too long for a hotfoot prank.

Thanks for mentioning that. Did not know. Absolutely an unbelievable athlete and would make the opposing team change gears once he got on base. Really fun to watch him play. Just an fyi for everyone, there is a one & done pneumonia vaccine available. One shot and that’s it for life. I received it last year with no ill effects.

Rickey being Rickey

Rickey Henderson didn't recognize John Olerud when he asked Olerud why he wore a batting helmet in the field. Henderson told Olerud that he had a teammate on the Mets the previous year who did the same thing, but it was actually Olerud.
