Reusable oil filter

Even if you make the huge assumption that it works as well as a regular filter and will last forever... the math behind it doesn't work for 99% of users:

That filter costs $90 + shipping (let's say $5 for the sake of argument)
Most decent cheap filters cost around $3.50 a pop.
Assuming most people drive 4,000 miles between oil changes, it would take--
108,571 miles of driving one car to recoup the cost...
not to mention the inconvenience of having to clean a filter! Ewww...
Most people don't want to clean their filters, and very few own the same vehicle for that many miles. I'll stick with my AC delco, Purolator, or Wix.

Well, it is 90 dollars plus shipping so roughly 100 dollars even

Lets say you buy good filters right now and are paying about 5 dollars each. 100 divided by 5 will give us 20. So you could buy 20 of your regular filters for the price of this one filter. If you do the normal 5000 mile OCI, it would take 100,000 miles before you use up all of the 20 filters that you bought with the 100 dollars. So in theory, it wont be until your 21st OC that you would actually be able to recoup on the original 100 dollar filter that you bought. After that, you would save approx. 100 dollars for every 100,000 miles that you put on the car.

Figure in all of the cleaning that you will have to do to the filter. I imagine it will take approx. 30 minutes each OC just to clean out the filter.

I say it is not worth it.

Times that tuff you can't swing a $2-5 filter every 5,000+
miles???, give me your add., i'll send ya a dollar.

Thanks for the information, but I was wondering how the filter works. How does it filter the oil? Has anyone cut one of these open? The price of filters will be going up along with everything else.

chad-55: The main problem is recovering your costs while you own your car. Your next car is likely to use a different filter and it probably won't work on it. This is all exclusive of if it even filters to any decent level. You've got to clean it occasionally and that involves solvents and/or other stuff.

I would think that something like a Motor Guard or Frantz would be more favorable. Even though you have to recover even more money, the unit itself is transferable to another vehicle.

One member has one and likes it ..but I can't get the math to work on it

+ put the $100.00 in the bank so to say at 2.5% interest per year or carry the $100.00 on the credit card at minimum payment till paid of "the american way" at 21% then the cost of saving money will be astronomical. Seriously cleaning filters sucks With the above post and most of what Gary mentioned .Bypass filters are a waste of $$$ for 99% of the people who think they need them .Though the idea fun. Cleanable filters are great for racers so they can open up the filter a to see if there is metal etc in the filter.
