Retirement (not mine) - I'm free at last!

A nice card, with a genuine, polite note wishing her the best in her retirement, is the appropriate thing to do.

Not as emotionally satisfying, but still the right thing.

No matter how awful she was, wish her the best.
Agree here. A nice card. Maybe even a small gift card to a pet store. Shows you have class and style. Word sometimes gets around. Plus you never know if she will have future interaction with the next HR person. Never burn a bridge behind you, or in some cases , in front of you.

This. Even though she may never have any influence in your life again, there's the slim chance any sort of slight against her upon her departure, could backfire for you in some unforeseen way, down the road.

Best to take the high road, and don't look back.

Seeing someone you seriously dislike with good reason leave is always nice, but as some have said above, the devil you know might be better than the one you get. She might also be back on a part time contract basis, so tread carefully.
A gushy card is probably not in order, since she already knows how you feel about her.
Maybe just a brief personal encounter in which you tell her that while you haven't always (ever) seen eye-to-eye, you wish her the best with her retirement?

It's lots of fun to contemplate parting shots.

But we get paid to be professional.

But sometimes it's those fantasies that help us get through the day... Just remember, someone, somewhere, probably has the same opinion of you.
She's never held back. "Swine' has been her favorite term.of endearment for me. The worst I've called her to her face was "handsome" and "stout."

Sometimes its a better look, to show class and style in the face of bad behavior. Not with your nose in the air, but with an air of i'm not stooping to your level. I don't act like you do, I don't have to, and I'm not going to. Its an invite to act and conduct oneself as you do, if they are low class, its because they choose to be. Not because of how you or anyone treated them. A card and gift card looks classy to anyone around them, you could give it to her boss to hand to her, if you don't want to interact with her.

Good news. A memo has landed on my desk. My nemesis of the past 16 years, Old Stubblechin, the mustachioed HR lady has handed in her resignation effective September 1st. She is retiring due to undisclosed health issues and because she wants to dedicate her time to her wife and their six adopted poodles. I'm so happy for me. Of course, who knows what her replacement will be like. But really, it can only be an improvement. I need to find a parting gift. I'm thinking overstuffed food hamper/gift basket with a 'Go Away Now' note. I should throw in a pair of heavy-duty compression socks.

Be polite and professional.

What did she do for you not to like her ?

I have been nothing but polite.for 16 years. She's gonna get her $200 gift basket and a tearful farewell from me. Tears of joy.

This cake was made for a supervisor at a previous employer when he was leaving:

Don’t hold back and tell us how you really feel! Telling old Stubble Chin how you really feel could be counterproductive though. It could be the bosses undercover niece..
I worked one place where luckily before I got too comfortable to start saying what I thought  , I stumbled upon the fact that just about everyone was related except for me and a very few others! It was just unreal, especially in such a big place. Naturally, FOOT had to be removed from mouth a few times!

Well, it sounds like she already is living in the worst scenario possible: She has to live with herself.
I've seen her with her poodles in the wild. She was yanking their leashes and berating them constantly. I think she's always "on the job." Almost two more months to go. I won't celebrate until the fat lady has sung. I suspect she has a surprise for us up her sleeve.

Today I got my surprise. I found that our beloved HR lady has taken an early leave of absence. This may have to do with her retirement strategy which, as I also found out today, involves threatening to sue or suing the company for discrimination and bullying. It's ironic because her long-term presence as a social justice warrior has caused Xanax addiction to triple among the staff. I'm sure the company will settle for a ludicrous amount of money to make all this and her go away. I'm just glad I am her favorite. I'm the one who's been saying comparatively nice things about her! No, I do not know specifics, I don't want to know specifics, and even if I were to know specifics, I can't talk about it. All I know is her poodles will make out like bandits. What about my cats? They have financial needs if papa has a heart attack!
