Excellent! I pulled the plug, very clean. Oil was clean. The foam air pre-filter was rotted, but the pleated filter looked new. Top of the piston is black, but I didn't remove the head. Squirted some ether in there and replaced the plug.

Added about a cup of gas, primed 5 times, bulb felt firm, pulled her over a few times with the ignition disconnected..nice & smooth. Then lit her off. She started on the second pull with a puff of blue smoke.

Idled fine! Nice & steady. She's vibrating a bit, so I figure the blade needs balancing. Moved the throttle down to "Turtle", no problems. Still smooth and even. I squirted about 10 shots of throttle-body cleaner into the open carb while she was running...each one produced a small puff of black smoke. Figure I'll have to pull the head for a decarbon session.

Engaged the self-propel and took her for a spin in the yard. Belts fine, no binding. I shut her down, raised the deck, restarted with one easy pull.

My neighbor was glad to hear her running again. Said he figured about 10 yrs. since she'd be started. Fortunately, he stored her dry. Bought the mower around 1987 he recalls. Used a lot.

So far impressed with the B&S Quantum engine. It seems that's the way they USED to be built back when I was a kid; before they went CHEAP on the consumer stuff.

Mighty nice find this one!

Re: The MTD with the smoker-motor I resurrected...not sure how much it's worth. It was a beater when I got it!

Hey that great, sounds like you have a goodin'...

I have three old Snappers, oldest was my grandfather's he bought in the late 70s... Second is a Heinz 57 that is at least three others combined to make one, now runs a GXV160 Honda... Number three is a mostly original '87 model with a 3.5Hp B&S, traded a freebee '03 front drive Craftsman for that one... All three run great and use little to no oil...
