residue from heating oil

What in the world? Hard to believe that's actually happening in engines. The page doesn't say what temperatures these oils were subjected to. For all we know it was subjected to several hundred deg C, far in excess of what oil comes in contact with at normal operating temp even at the piston skirt.
 
The links at the top show some nice UOA including NOACK..
