Saturn s-series blow them all the time, but it's the internal rubber seal that goes, and they wind up underheating, a fail-safe way to go.

I would not change them for no reason, as the quality of new ones is all over the place.

One should watch their OBD data stream to see if their stats are "sticky" within the gauge dead zone, though. A little movement is normal, which is why they deadened the gauge.


What you said is true. The very first car I owned a late 89 Acura Integra had issue had issues with the thermostat failing. I was constantly replacing it. A Ford Focus 2000 lasted 200K with 2 thermostat changes. In the case of the integra, the engine overheated. In the case of the focus, the check engine come on. In the former case of the Integra, I may have cause damaged to the engine.

If there is a way to detect ODB, that would be great. I am going to investigate this.
