I've got a 12 year old bulb in my Geo and the other one is brand new because it burned out recently. The old bulb is noticeably dimmer. So maybe that is a reason you would want to replace early.

I always replace in pair and keep the working old one around. When one of the new pair burnt out chances are the other one is about the same in dimness as the old working bulb, and when I install it back in the car they do look like a matching pair.

That way you'll get the best of both world (except you need to keep a storage place for it).

This is how I've always done it. Simply replace the burnt out one. The other one will go usually about a year later or more, and I've never had it go very soon after the first was replaced. Also, I haven't had the bulbs go long enough to make a significant difference in light output between new and old.

I've found most bulbs are easy to replace, so when they burn out, off to the nearest auto parts store for a new one.

If I ever do my upgrade to HIRs, I will save the OEMs as emergency replacements until I can grab another HIR.

On this vehicle, the headlights are still original.
