Replacement engine for my lawnmower?

I've got a scotts push mower with a 6.5hp Briggs and Stratton Intek Pro. It was ran for a few hours with water in the oil, needless to say I will be replacing it.

Anyway, I'm looking at replacement engines @ smallenginewarehouse.com, looking for a 6-6.5hp intek replacement. How do I know what fits? Do all the vertical inteks have the same mounting pattern on the bottom?

I certainly don't know much about it but when I replaced mine a while back, I found there are different shaft lengths to consider too. Guess it has to do with whether it's self propelled or not.

write the model # down and but the exact same motor. you can go to brigs and stratton.com with any mounting pattern questions. they have a num yoy can call with specific questions. i beleive you can e-mail em too. did the engine seize or something? it might not have damaged anything if not. drain and refill with fresh oil. i have heard good and bad things about the ohv inteks, but in general, briggs are pretty hard to kill. we had one in the back yard when i moved in to my present house that the previous owner had. the gas cap was missing. after the mower was tipped over and the water ran out of the gas tank from the rain, we looked inside the tank and it looked like black goo, almost like tar in the tank. just for fun we put some fresh gas in it, and after about 10 hard pulls, the critter fired off and smoked like a tire fire for a minute or so then cleared up and ran fine. got a kick out of it. you can imagine what the oil loked like. i doubt it was ever changed at all. outside with no cover or gas cap. change the plug on yours when you do the oil. do you have a northern hydralics store in your area? they also carry alot of different motors in stock, and what they don't have, they can probably order.....penz

It didn't seize, but it smokes pretty bad. Also a crack in the carburetor. I know I could fix it...but I just don't think it's worth it.

I think I'll be buying from smallenginewarehouse.com, their prices are about what they are going for on ebay...except there aren't currently any vertical intek's on ebay.

Does anybody know if the one with electric start would also have an alternator?

You can see if they have an equivalent model AND series#.

An electric start mower typically has a "charge coil" that will supply a few amps to keep the battery charged.
Apparently however, some mowers require manual recharging, depending on the brand. (You might check out the Scotts website and see if their mower comes with a battery charger)
Personally, I'd just skip the electric start version. It's only a 6.5 HP engine, and you avoid the hassle of replacing the battery every couple years. You WOULD also have to buy a battery and the associated start switch etc. That's probably more trouble than it's worth.

I dont know all the sizes they have but Tractor Supply Stores also have Briggs engines.If a store is around you,you might try them.

On another note, Ebay has small engines galore. Some vendors have fantastic deals and are real stores, so you can call them and order rather than use Ebay.

I found a new Kawasakl 6HP lawn mower engine for 125 bucks complete. In my opinion, the Kawasaki mower engine is the best long life engine around, and as a plus they are very smooth running and power exceeds similarly rated Briggs. Also, EPA engine life is "A" rated vs. "C".
