Wow so many failures on that car. Seems like every week something else is breaking. Should be almost rebuilt by now.
He is going to school for auto mechanics. So rebuilding the Saturn is not necessarily a bad thing. He can apply that knowledge to his studies.
+1. And any car is going to have mechanical components wear out. I'd rather learn about the repairs and have a car that is a known quantity than be swapping cars more often.
^ This, I have to replace the headgasket on my only vehicle. Yeah, it's 20 years old but it's what I have. The engine's health was fine according to UOA and overall condition, without a true tear down mind you, but the first sign of confirmed coolant this last UOA and now I can replace the HG without a prolonged period of increased wear during use. It gives me a chance to learn with a friend that will be taking the lead on removing the manifold(s) and the head. Will be fun, and the best part is over at ETCG's website he says he's had much success replacing just the HG in the straightforward manner I'll be having to do this.
So, I don't blame the OP for replacing the unavoidable and for taking care of his ride. Replacing worn = using materials/resources that need consumption and hopefully avoiding eating through tires faster. As an example only.
Look, not many folks can buy new or even used on credit and make payments for life. I fall into that category at the moment. Some gotta buy and do it themselves. Of course, there are those that choose to be cheap anyway, but that's another story. Good investment doesn't always mean more money up front and there is no true vehicle without replacement parts, etc etc.
DIY, and learn to do it right.
