Repairing wires in engine bay

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that some parts of the outer layer of the knock sensor in my engine is exposing the wire.

The engine is a V6 so the knock sensor is in the middle of the 2 banks.

What do I use to repair this?
I would like to use heatshrink but there is a plug at the end of the wire so heatshrink won't fit over.

Is electrical tape ok to use considering the heat?
Self Amalgamating tape perhaps?

If the wiring is showing itself, I'd likely cut, fit heatschrink over one end, resolder and wrap. The knock sensor produces it's own voltage so you won't short out the engine ECU if the wiring touches the body, but it's not like engine knock is harmless either...

If it's only the outer layer, which holds the individual wires and their insulation together, that's damaged tape will do it.

Stuff some RTV down in there.

For all we know the stock wiring harness is like this.

If the conductor is not cut, I would just wrap it tightly with a good electrical tape. Why complicate things and it will hold up.Afterwards you can put some wire loom over the harness to protect it from heat.

Knock sensor wires are shielded. Not sure if yours is internal or external of the wire insulation. I'd wrap some foil around it before using electrical tape

I like using Scotch 27 glass cloth tape for high temp places.

Liquid electrical tape is fantastic stuff.

You need to protect the wire to keep it from happening again after you repair the insulation...I'd probably try a small piece of plastic wire conduit secured with regular electrical tape over the repaired wire. If you can't find small enough conduit, wrapping it in electrical tape would be the second best option.
