Just curb scrubbed a wheel on my 2020 ES350. Pretty bad. I sanded/polished as much as I could. Still have some gouges but good enough. The area I “repaired” is now bright and shiny compared to original. I am hoping a matte clear coat will reduce difference. Am I thinking about this right? Is there a better way to take the shine off the area I polished? Thanks.

Same thing happened to me. Sent the wheel to a local repair shop when my own repair looked mediocre. For about $200 it looks like new. Pricey but worth it.

You are pretty close to these guys.

Order it in advance, drive over, and they will mount and balance your existing tire on your new wheel while you wait.

As to the original question, when I repainted the alloy wheels on my Accord they were too shiny as well. A coat of semi-mat clear toned that down very satisfactorily. They look very nice - for an 18 year old car.

Good topic. was just thinking about this today.
I have the factory 2006 Caravan wheels on my 1999
OEM Caravan 2006 Wheel.webp

But only one of them looks anywhere near this nice.
I was considering sandblasting them clean, then maybe like 2000 sanding the outer edge and the 5 spokes to get a shine but not chrome like finish. Then clear coating them.

Would that work?

I suddenly required glasses at age 45, and started to run into the curb constantly. Very weird for a guy who is a racer, dirt biker and overall driving enthusiast. Come to find out, my prescription is +2.25 and eyeglasses magnify everything to the point where my curb distance judgment was way off. No issue with contact lenses, so that's what I use.

Anyway, my local wheel specialist and I were on a first name basis! He does great work and was able to repair wheels that I thought were beyond help!
