Well luckily the company in question is Ford, not Fords. Though I'd be interested to learn about this Fords company and their ownership of this "all garbage" that you speak of.

Nobody asked you.

pfft, if you were in a Volvo, none of this would have happened

Some people just don't understand the value in quality

So, to be clear:

You posit that had the OP been in a Volvo, that he would not have been rear-ended by a woman who was not watching the road but rather observing another accident that had happened?

Ultimately that's what your statement implies here, as "none of this would have happened" certainly encapsulates the lead-in to the accident, the events of the accident, and the subsequent experience after.

And if by chance you had meant to state that specifically, the engine racing (a condition for which we do not know the details of BTW) would not have happened in a Volvo then I feel I am obligated to mention the fact that Ford owned Volvo from 2000 through to 2010 and there was, as typical with a parent company being at the helm, a lot of part sharing happening during that 10 year span and certainly after, as the new owners would need to work to exercise the Ford DNA from their product portfolio. So it is quite possible, perhaps even probable, that if there was indeed a component failure or issue here that caused what the OP experienced, that it would happen in a Volvo as well.

The throttle body on these engines is right on the top of the engine, at the front on the driver side. If you hit the hitch on the truck in front of you just right, I bet it damaged it and locked it open/cut the power to it, which does as was mentioned earlier and goes to a low power not full closed. I would report it as suggested, but that seems most likely to me.

Another possibility is that the intake manifold is probably plastic, you might have cracked it and caused a vacuum leak.

How many times have you seen an accident where after impact a vehicle was left with it's engine racing? I have seen this a lot. Long before DBW.

I'm on travel, without much time (read: too lazy) to update.

Enterprise got me into a new car the very next day (as expected,) a new Focus. It was either that or a Camaro. I had a Camaro drop-top 4-5 rentals ago and found visibility to be much worse than even my wife's Civic coupe, so that was out. I didn't find out until we walked out that he also had a Fiat 500, which I had 4 rentals ago and liked a lot (as a rental.)

When I have time I'll respond to specific questions. For now, just a few comments:

After I shut off the engine it was never started again. A good samaritan helped me push it onto the shoulder, and the last I saw of it was the tow-truck guy hooking-'er up as I was driven back to my hotel by the awesome local police officer. As an aside, did you guys know that the back of a cruiser is nothing but hard plastic? Makes sense now, but I had no idea beforehand.

Some of you stated the throttle may have stuck at part throttle, but it felt more aggressive than that. Unfortunately, I shifted to Park and shut'er down as soon as I realized what was happening. Couple that with the "fog of war" and the details (other than what I posted before about the RPM and behavior I noted.)

The Focus, from what I learned in another thread, has a similar dual-clutch AT, but though the one in the Focus feels a lot more refined. It may be the additional mass of the larger Focus, but it feels more like a traditional slush box than what a "manu-matic.' It may need an alignment with 37k miles on it, but I found the Fiesta to handle much better than the Focus. The Focus wanders and tram-lines a bit and even seems a bit louder, even though the tires seem as new as the ones on the Focus (my previous Yaris rental had nearly bald tires and I flew in during one of the last ice storms here in the Midwest. Luckily, I was able to walk to work every day, though that didn't save me from injury - I ate it Home Alone-style while walking to the office one morning!
