Rental Car Fuel Level Monitoring

When I return a rental, I take a picture of the odometer and the fuel gauge right before I shut it off and return the keys. Plus, the photo is time stamped and with a GPS location.
National/Enterprise has never made it an issue with me.
Might be worth taking a picture of the keys also.

I once was charged $500 USD for missing keys. When I went to pick-up the car, no vehicle was in the stall. I went back and was routed to another vehicle, of the same make and model. When I returned the car, I never got a receipt that the vehicle was returned.

What I believe happened is I drove away with a different vin than what the computer stated. So when I express returned the car, it never registered. I had a bad feeling all along, and should have gone with my gut and not have done a express return, not that would of solved the issue.

After paying $500 for alleged lost keys, for a few years I always took pictures of the keys, and emailed the picture to myself as a time stamp.

I'm in Houston right now and have a Dollar rental. The attendant at IAH when I picked up the car was pushing heavily for the prepaid fuel option. I told him I would fill it up right before I returned it. He said do it very close by (and he told me specifically where to do it), because some of their cars had sensors that could tell when I filled up and how far I had driven since that point and not to fill up 15-20 miles away and try to drive it in with it still on full thinking I would "get away" with not leaving them a full tank. I smiled and said "Get out of here..." and he said no, I'm serious.

I guess I'll find out Friday morning....
