Does anyone have an effective way to remove was stains from gray/black plastic trim? I have a bunch on my truck that I can't seem to get cleaned off.

If you are going to use lacquer thinner you better test it on a similar material (like a piece of the same material on a junk yard car). Lacquer thinner may be able to melt the plastic part you are trying to clean the wax from.

I've never had an issue with this practice, and I know a few detailers who also utilize this method on a large volume of cars.

Don't use lacquer thinner, it may be incompatible with certain plastics and it can turn black vinyl trim gummy in fact you might end up with little fibers from your cloth bonding to the gummed up trim, it'll ruin the plastic tailights, necessitating compounding or if left to soak wetsanding.

I think you may be thinking paint thinner, aka mineral spirits. That is safe, and also evaporates much slower. A toothbrush and mineral spirits will work at removing the white staining. In my experience it is the best way, better than degreasers even.

Keep the magic eraser far, FAR away from the paint.

Yes so true but it really gets the over wax off with ease!
