I purchased my car with an aftermarket car starter installed on it. I can't tell you much about it other than the key fob says "xtreme" on it. I want to add an alarm system but still have the remote start all on one key fob. Is it possible or do I need a new system/2 key fobs?

Some aftermarket remote starter companies sell alarm modules that work with their remote starters using a wire that connects between the two.

Can you show us a picture of the remote for better identification?

I have installed many remote starters and could probably tell you the manufacturer if I see the remote or the module.

Directed Electronics (DEI) has a line they market to car dealers called Auto Mate. There is an Auto Mate security upgrade alarm you can buy that is designed to interface with a factory keyless entry system:

DEI used to make a Viper add-on model too, but I don't see it on their website. They may still have it and I just can't find it. If your existing remote start has door lock outputs on it, yes you could add an alarm upgrade to it. What you need is a wire that changes its state on lock and unlock. The upgrade module is connected to the door lock circuit so it knows when to arm and disarm.

Check out www.directed.com and the Auto Mate section for more info, or find a DEI dealer in your area. Yes, it can be done and be made to work with your existing remote control but it might cost less to just install a new DEI alarm with remote start.

THanks Jimmy.
I might just have to get a viper alarm/starter The starter stuff should be already wirend and I can just plug the viper in right?

The DEI product won't have the same plug configurations as your existing Xtreme remote start unit. But all the necessary wiring should be there and an experienced installer should have no problem installing a Viper, Python or an Automate alarm with remote start. I remember now that the Automate line is strictly for installation on vehicles to be sold at car dealerships, but there are other DEI brands such as Viper and Python that you can buy. The price will probably include the installation, DEI does not allow the sale of its products over the counter. www.directed.com has a dealer locator so you can find a local DEI shop in your area and get more info.

DEI is the very best car alarm and remote start you can buy. They are simple to operate and they last forever, provided they are installed correctly.
