remote oil filter(s) question

I searched the board but could not find the answer, so here goes!

I have a 1973 455 pontiac engine block. I have installed headers, which results in VERY limited clearance to get the oil filter in the stock location. I have to dent it up some just to force it past the header pipes. Obviously not a good thing! not to mention heat from close proximity to the headers.

So, hence the need for a remote filter setup. The question: whether to go with single or dual remote filters! I have seen both, and I have some thoughts on each.

Two filters: if they are both high quality filters, they SHOULD always each filter to the same micron level, so the second will in theory just be filtering clean oil. This would result in needing the first filter in series needing replacement sooner. This would probably have more oil volume, which is good for longevity and temperature, but there is more potential for restriction in oil flow when passing through two filters.

One filter: Probably less volume, although I can put on the biggest one the adapter will allow. Perhaps not as cool because of less volume and less time away from the block for the oil. But, less potential for flow restriction I would imagine. This would obviously be a very good filter, such as a K&N.

opinions please!=) Thanks. oh, and I am here because Patman has told my club over and over we should come here for oil questions too, instead of just asking him all the time.=)
 
Two filters are in parallel, not series. Each filter gets half the oil flow, so there is much less of a pressure drop. You can also use two of the largest filter you can find, so you get alot of extra capacity.
 
oh! that makes a lot more sense than having them in series lol! well that pretty much settles it for me! better flow + more volume = happy engine!!

one more question though, I have found jegs part# 969-1120 as an option. but, it comes with neoprene lines. I would rather have some better true braided lines for maximum protection and insulation. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a "kit" with high quality fittings and braided lines, or at least what part#'s I should get for an adapter plate and a mounting bracket, so I can have the lines routed and fitted at a local shop?

Indeed Jegs sells all the parts in house for such install custom fabrication for your application maybe necessary.

Unless you have the gifts of a Macgyver or something

Try to find a shop that can do this...in your case having sucha trick and well maintained motor...with those high temp headers included...stainless steel oil lines are quite a wise decision

I've done this on my 4.0 Jeep engine.

My advice is to make sure that you mount the remote as close to OEM height as possible. If you mount it too high and the lines are too long they will drain back to the pan through the pump. I had to install expensive check valves (Vicon sprung check balls) to inhibit this.

The SS outer shell in only for external environmental insult. It may dissapate some localized "hot spot" over a larger area, however.

Get the Chevy Perma cool mount from jegs (13/16 thread). It allows you to use the bigger (2 quart) chevy filters (Napa Gold 1794) so you can add about 3 quarts to your capacity.

If you want a "parts list" to order from jegs, email or PM me and I'll tell you what you need to order. It will require you to "know what you're doing" to get it done. The SS lines are compression fittings and you cut the line to fit. The fittings are AN and you need the type that are AN on the compression end and NPT on the ends that go in the remote mount. Since most mounts are 1/2" ..you typically order #8 (8/16 -1/2") line.
 
from my own remote system on a buick v6, i found to much pressure drop with #8 lines. use #10 or #12 lines and only 1/2 inch pipe thread fittings.
