Remote car starters

My wife wants a remote car starter installed on her car for a christmas present, I do not know much about them and would like to hear some opinions on them (pros/cons). any problems with them? How about what brand is conciderd the best? etc.

I bought one for my wife. She loves it. I ended up buying one for myself as well.

Go for the "long range" option. Mine will start from a few blocks away.

Also, check out the install shop carefully, get references for a good track record of plenty of installs.

This install can really mess with a modern car, especially with security systems.

My advice is to pay extra to take it to a place that is known to be competent. I asked my Acura dealer who they recommended. I called a few dealerships and got the same answer.

I've been really pleased with the result, and the wife loves it as well.

Is it an auto? Manual transmissions can be pretty expensive.

I spent over 8 yrs in that industry. The units made by Clifford are still the best (although they are now owned by DEI).Good installation is the key, make sure the shop knows their stuff, make sure that all connections are soldered and that they use the appropriate security bypass system.The only negative is that once she has one she will never want a car without it!

So far in the past 4-5 years I've installed 6, all bought from Canadian Tire, Pro Start. The instructions are great, if you go to their website you can get a wiring legend for your car which so far has been 99.9% correct (the headlight wire color was wrong on my '01 S-10).
Although Canadian Tires support sucks as far as getting the ignition bypass module for GM was concerned Pro Start's was great, they even gave me CT's stock number.
