Remanufactured vs New

Looking at a Reman'd pump for my power steering vs a new one. Is there problems with Reman'd ones? Or should I always buy new?
 
It's really a dilemma, many times the reman has advantages over new.

Sometimes new parts are updated and the reman won't be.

Too many variables to make a blanket statement here...
 
New made by who? An OEM or OE supplier, or a Chinese new copy? Could make a big difference.

See if your Toyota dealer can get factory remans. These are often the best choice: They're twice the price of aftermarket remans, but are just about brand-new in quality and last as long as new.

You'll install it just ONCE, unlike aftermarket remans, where it's just about guaranteed that you'll need to claim the warranty at least once, if not repeatedly...

THIS is a very important question that few will ask. Never used to be an issue but nowadays...
 
Personally I like OEM factory remanufactured compared to parts stores remanufactured parts. I had three set of axles that vibrated and two alternators that flickered the charging light. I finally went with genuine Honda factory remanufactured parts and my problems disappeared.
 
Rebuilt parts are like anything else you buy.
Some are very good, while others are junk.
Do you know any local techs who buy a lot of parts or counter guys who sell a lot of parts?
One of them could tell you what to buy and what to avoid based upon their experience.
There are people here who could tell you that as well.
Maybe sombody with the right experience will PM you?
I'm trying to give the experienced folks a hint that you could use some advice.
If the OEM pump gave up after less than ten years and 100K, it can't be all that great itself. There may be better rebuilts available, as someone else noted above.
 
Problems with remanufactured power steering pumps are often the result of not considering the underlying issue. That is, why the pump went bad in the first place.

Does your brand/model of vehicle have a history of bad pumps ?
Has your pump been replaced before ?
Which vehicle/engine do you have ?
Mileage ?

Be sure to drain out the old fluid into a clean container, and then flush out whatever else may be left behind, and look at it carefully or you could set yourself up for a series of "bad pumps." Do that before removing the old pump - you don't want the new pump to start out with bad, contaminated fluid.
 
Price available to you is the biggest factor. You may be able to score a 100% New, name brand part off the interweb or something for near similar price which is then well worth it. Look around and decide based on the price difference between each and your specific situation.

Also factor in:
Are you changing it yourself or paying someone labor?
Easy part to get at/change?
Age, condition of the car.

If there's a big price difference, I usually go with the reman. Too many future variables can come into play, which makes spending the least amount of money typically the best option.
 
a rebuilt unit is ONLY as good & reliable & durable as the person doing the rebuilding, AND how stringent he/she is testing the other components that will go into the unit be it new, used, refurbished or found on the floor.
 
Well, it can't be for the Prius, since that one is EPS.

I would get a new OE pump if the budget allows. The A1Cardone stuff tends to be hit/miss from my experience, and I would avoid it if possible.
 
Reman quality depends on who rebuilt it.
I often deal with pumps that are carelessly painted flat black, and they last 1 year.

Then I deal with reman pumps from the dealer and never see that car come back.

I really liked the factory reman pump that I installed on my mom's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They painted it properly, and there was a new reservoir and pulley already installed.
