A friend recently purchased a 07 FJ Cruiser. The majority of his mileage consists of highway commuting. What harm will come if he uses “regular gas” as opposed to “premium” as recommend by the owner’s manual?

06Ranger,
Look at the wording in the Toyota's owners manual carefully regarding fuel type and grade. I don't have my manual in front of me, but 87 can be used. It's all I use. I couldn't tell the difference between the different grades from a mileage standpoint. If it was summer and I was going to tow something, I would use 91. Others in different forums say max H.P. is with 91, but my butt dyno couldn't tell the difference.

What about the onboard computer sensors?

The onboard sensors on my truck must work pretty well. I have never heard it ping, ever. I read somewhere that the difference between using 87 and 91 octane fuel on a dyno was 10hp. Maybe, but I couldn't prove that. Check out Toyota Nation forums for 05+ Tacoma's. I think I read it in there somewhere. There are lots of threads on what octane fuel to use in the V-6.
