Since we moved in our refrigerator has made a bang noise every so often. I always thought it was an ice maker. We lived here a year before I realized we didn't have an ice maker. Well the last few weeks the noise happens every time the compressor kicks on
And now when the compressor is on it hums really loud like a little air compressor or something? I've never seen a fridge do this
Is it a compressor failure? Hopefully it lasts till I move . My landlord won't answer the phone so fixing it probably is going to happen.

May be a worn bushing in the fan moter that blows air or maybe the condensor is full of dirt, pet hair etc. That will make the head pressures high and that will burn up the compressor.

First thing I would do (and I do it every year). Clean the coils, clean the compressor on the outside, clean the fan and fan blades. Obviously clear all the dust and dirt out of the area.

Doing this every year will double the life of the refrig.

Check things out from there.

I know the cheapy Frigidaire I have makes a POP noise or two when the frost-free heating elements kick in. I assume it's from things expanding and contracting. Then if your lucky you get to hear it tinkling into it's drip pan.

thats it, The "pop" is the sound of the condensation pump from the frost free freezer. goes to the pan underneath! Its what a new refridge sounds like Boy!

Well cleaning everthing should allow it to run at lower presssure which means it could last longer.

Obviously you could get the compressor replaced but I'm not sure I would go that route.

Start looking for a new one. hopefully with the time to look you can buy for cheap and get one that is way more efficient/

I know our old side by side took about 3 times the amps. As I recall our now 14 year old WhirlPool takes like only 2 or 3 KW/day. Insanely efficient. But again I thoroughly clean her up yearly.
