There is an article in the March 2008 PC Magazine entitled 'The Battle for Your Desktop.' They compared Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Ubuntu Linux. They tied to determine as fairly as they could which operating system was best.

Remember; this is PC Magazine. Most of the readers of that magazine probably use some version of Windows. The conclusion they come to is that overall Mac OS 10.5 is the best. Regardless if you agree with their conclusions or not it is extremely refreshing to me that it is possible to have an open minded discussion of operating systems. You would not find such an open minded discussion in some other areas that I could mention but I will not.

My own personal opinion is that if a person wanted to use a Mac it might be better to get a good used Mac, install plenty of RAM, get a good monitor, and use Mac OS 10.4 Tiger on the computer. I personally feel that Mac OS 10.4 is the best O/S Apple has come out with. You can actually run four-five O/Ss on that one computer. You could run Mac 10.4, Windows XP, Classic Mac O/S 9.2.2, Linux, etc. That Mac would be useful even if your primary computer was a Windows Vista computer. You can't run Classic on Leopard. I personally run two O/Ss on my iMac and I could easily install Mac 9.2.2. I can't see any use for Linux. My main computer runs Windows Vista.

I feel good about PC Magazine. They have demonstrated to me that they can have very open minded discussions. They will probably receive some emails from some people complaining about the comparisons of O/Ss and the results. Most of their readership probably use Windows. It is nice seeing that there are still some people who can think outside of the box. People willing to look at what else is available and not just march in step and say whatever is currently the in thing to say. Good job PC Magazine. I am more willing to read their magazine after discovering that the people working for that magazine can think for themselves and don't feel they must support certain companies or certain O/Ss just because of the nature of their magazine or where most of their advertising money probably comes from. If only more people could be like this.

Well, for overall usability, Mac OS X has the rest of the market beat. OS 7/8/9 never were all *that* usable to me. Nice, easy, but not terribly usable nor flexible. Fast forward some years later and OS X 10.2 & later is the clear winner.

Gotta figure into the equation that an Apple computer would never have won their top spot if they were locked to the Motorola/IBM CPU chips. Giving the heave-ho to the old PPC architecture and welcoming Intel inside it's cases was a win-win move for Apple.

I was not impressed with the first few Mac OS X O/Ss. The very first one (10.0) was a complete joke in my view and they never should have charged for it; 10.0 should have been a beta. When Apple came out with 10.3 the O/S started to get a whole lot better and 10.4 from my point of view was close to perfection. I am disappointed with 10.5 so far.

I kind of think it is a good idea to run both a Windows computer and a Mac. Actually of course you can also run Windows and Mac OS X on the same computer. You can potentially run four or five O/Ss on just two computers. That should get you covered no matter what may come up. I am currently running three O/Ss on two computers and I could install Mac Classic 9.2.2 but I can't see any need to do so.

I was surprised by the PC Magazine article. It is nice that people are allowed to be open minded and have discussions without being attacked by narrow minded people. There are some websites and some magazines where I cannot imagine a discussion like this taking place. And you notice that it was PC people who are often stereotyped as being narrow minded who came out with this article in a PC magazine. Of course if their conclusion had been that Windows XP or Windows Vista was the best O/S there probably would have been attacks. But the article they came out with and the fact they were allowed to come out with that article in a PC magazine disproves the stereotypes.

It is clear that most people aren't impressed with Vista; massive price reductions everywhere except the US.

Apple is making strides to where people want to use the OS.

MS is making OS's people strive to avoid.
