I'm in an oil quandary here. So I've been reading that the newer oils have reduced zinc levels making it bad for older engines with non-roller cams causing increased wear. Does this only apply to the conventional oils or is synthetic affected as well? I have a lot of older muscle cars that I may be switching oils in.

Then go with something like Amsoil ZROD or

ZROD

Dominator

Dominator

or someting in the Joe Gibbs line.

I have an 86' Celebrity I am using Quaker State Ultimate Durability in, and wonder if it is OK having flat tappets? 2.8L is No muscle car. My 07' Subaru has rollers.

I just received a case of Kendall w/Ti this morning, now on a fill of Kendall for my 1st time.
Prior oil was PP.
Reduced zinc/phosphorus levels trend seem to help protect the CATs, my understanding.

That's what I have in my '75 GMC 350 right now. Is that better than using M1?

I would not worry about it personally. We have been using oils with SM levels of ZDDP in 70's era SBC for nearly 10 years now. Engine failure has not happened yet. Also I highly doubt 1975 PCMO's had more ZDDP out of the bottle than what comes out the bottle today.

Not to mention that SN oils are a lot better formulated than anything you could buy off the shelves in 1975.

That is what I would run in an old muscle car. That or Joe Gibbs.

^^This^^

I have run MANY flat tappet engines that I have rebuilt on SM and SN oils with zero issues. If your valve spring pressures are higher than stock, that may justify an added level, but adding excess can cause more wear in the form of corrosion.

Shame they don't import this here.
Only the 5w50. Not as good for my flat tappets.
