That was the way it was designed.

Perhaps someone should ask Redline for their approval number so that it can be checked out with the GM approval administration?

I'm kind of one of those people. While I'm sure most of the time, Dex VI would work fine in Dex II applications (late 80's), I have a hard time believing its perfectly suited for something like a 68 Impala. It would seem this ATF would be ideal; newest synthetic base oils with a correct additive package for Dex II specs.

These newer fluids are way better even for quite old transmissions. As long as the transmissions in question do not have a history of continuous pollution/contamination with dubious after market 'additives' and have had the fluid changed in accordance with manufacturer's requirements.

If you are worried about DexVI for your Dex II and Dex III application, use Redline D4 ATF.
I have been using it for a while......since before the new D6 ATF, which is designed for the Dexron VI application.
I plan to continue to us the D4 in my Mercon V and Dex III vehicles.

Visit Redline Oil's website to read up on it..

Either call Dave or contact Cameron of Redline oil here. He is a member and could best answer your question. FWIW their regular syn atf does not carry the GL-4 rating like some others inluding the D4 and is a lighter viscosity. Might have something to do with their recommendation as well. Confirm with them.

Interesting. I posted a few days ago about a fluid recommendation for my 1987 Civic with an automatic transmission. Specs call for original Dexron. I was leaning toward Valvoline Maxlife but am now wondering what the advantage would be, if any, to using a Dexron II product. I guess it is closer to the original than III. Different formulation, additives, etc?

Dexron II has to have been pretty close to Dexron since it was released like 4 years after Dexron. That being assumed it may be that this Dex II is better suited for original Dex applications.

Also, are you sure an 87 Civic specs Dex 1? AFAIK it was superseded by like 72 or 73.

According to the manual "If level is at, or below, low mark, add DEXRON-type automatic transmission fluid". The car is in storage so I cannot actually see what is stamped on the dipstick, so there is a possibility it is different. I will check it shortly......
