I know this is a NHRA Pro Stock oil, but, what about a bracket race engine? I have a car that runs 10.20's in the quarter mile with a pump gas 540" BBC. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mike

to BITOG.

Do you just use the car for bracket racing? If so, I think I would use their racing 10w for the application. If you drive it on the street and bracket race it, I would use their 5w30.

I guess the first question should have been, what kind of car are we talking about.

Would also suggest you contact Dave at Red Line.

It's a 81 Malibu with a 10 to 1 540" BBC. Aluminum heads with a small roller cam. The car weights 3350 lbs. The only reason I asked is I can get a deal on Gallon jugs of Redline racing oil for $25 a jug. I think it's too light for my application. BTW, I worked for a Pennzoil dealer in Columbus for 16 years. Ever heard of McGlaughlin oil in Columbus?

Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes, I've heard of McGlaughlin Oil. $25 a jug for Red Line Racing Oil is a good deal. See if you can get it in a heavier weight. I agree, I think the 5W is just a little thin for your application.

If you're strictly bracket racing your car then I don't see a problem with the 5WT since you only need to run the engine for a minute or two. If this is a street driven machine then I would go with RL 10w30 street formula.

My car is about 4/10 slower than yours and about the same weight. I use 20-50 beacuse it's 95% street driven and makes a lot of torque at a low rpm. There might not be a problem with the thin stuff for a 1/4 mile run here and there but I would definately stay away from it if the car is street driven. What's the hp and tq curves like?

My car is street driven also. Just down to the cruise or show. As for HP and TQ, I have no idea. I built the car myself, and bought the short block and finished the rest of the engine myself.

Mike

If your going to drive it on the street then I would not use any of the Red Line Racing Oils. They have very little detergents and dispersants in them. They are a purpose built oil.

Like johnny said, the racing oils are meant to be dumped after pretty much every run or in some cases after a full qualifiying/competition weekend, and that's it. The fuel dilution and low oil pressure you'll see from around town idling would be pretty brutal on your engine with that oil.
