If one is following the severe service interval of 3750 miles under warranty, a synthetic is a little hard to swallow. Then again, the local dealership charges $70 for a conventional oil change.

Garak,

Once again, we agree. If you are in the US, synthetic is an easy choice and we don't have to stick to the 3 month severe schedule.

If you are in "Canadia" just use Pennzoil Conventional and be done with it.

Actually, we have been having a couple decent synthetic specials as of late. I've got more Pennzoil Conventional than I know what to do with, so any experimentation has to wait. Besides, I want to get out of warranty before I bother with extended OCIs.

I believe that I saw Quaker State Ultimate Durability for around $25 or so for the big jug. That's almost tolerable.

It's too rare of an occurrence, though, unfortunately.

Red Line recommends them for use in those API service classes. Red Line actually doesn't hold any API certifications, their street oils are well over the phosphorus limit. RL's additive package reads more like a CI-4+ HDEO than a SM/SN GF-4/GF-5 oil in a VOA or UOA.

The other issue for people with newer Nissans looking for an ester based oil isn't the API certification. Even if RL were API certified (rather than just meeting the specifications), it's definitely not ILSAC GF-4 or better, and that's another thing required in the manual.

red line does absolutlely meet those standards. i have a new red line 5w30 bottle in front of me..officially red line does not get into the api stuff because, according to red line the api dumbs down the oils.red line wants a far superior oil then the rest of the field. their chemist explained that to me.

recommended for:

ilsac gf5
api sn/sm/sl/sj/cf
acea a3/b3/b4
mb 229.1/229.3/229.5
vw/audi 500.00/501.01/502.00

Fair enough however does it just say it meets the standards or is it certified. Big difference. Not that I doubt red-line's claims but if under warantee that is a slippery slope.
Red line makes likely some of the best lubes on earth but that certification is important.

dave at red line can explain that part better then i. however, the oils that are certified still meet the min requirements of api. red line feels not to pay that horrible fee to be api cert. i never go by api anyways since it is a inferior cert. as compared to the acea. everyone should use an oil that is acea cert. a3/b5/ or a3/b3. imho

Exactly. I would have no concerns in using their products (and I use some of their stuff), but "meeting" and "certification" are different things. Regardless of what they claim, GF-5 is not compatible with A3/B3/B4 and the other European specifications. There are no 5w30 GF-5 oils with an HTHS of 3.5 or above, and there are no A3/B3/B4 oils that meet GF-5. A1/B1 sure, but not A3/B3.
