Back in Arizona. Finally
Has anybody changed out the factory fill to Redline MT90 - the book specs 75w90 GL4 oil for the trans so MT 90 ought to be good.
Several Mazda forums have people doing it and all seems well, it's just I'd like to hear from somebody here at bitog - we're a more tuned in lot.....

Man, that's a fantastic UOA!!

I've used Redline MTL in my Bimmer since it was new and at nearly 100k it still shifts as new, so I am no stranger to RL's products.

It's just that this Speed3 is a new kind of animal to me...right off the bat, Direct Injection on the engine leads to dilution of the oil, which necessitates 3k OCI's forever. That, coupled with a six speed trannie you have shift very slowly for the 3-4 miles or so to keep from sctatching the 1-2 shift has me wondering about Mazda's engineering dept.

The shifting straightens out once the fluid warms up but with a brand new car it was a little unsettling.

Having said all that, this car is a rocket and really is a blast to drive.

I've got some MT 90 coming and as soon as it gets here in it goes.

Thanks for answering my question. Cheers! DV

dv -That direct injection allows better fuel dispersion/vaporization and ecomomy, and should have less fuel dilution.
I don't get why you'd have more dilution.
Maybe the computer is set to be a little rich, but then what are O2 sensors for?

Visit the used oil analysis oil section. I would wager that the DI is wrongly being blamed for rich fuel tuning that is catered to emissions and turbo'd engine's life. It also doesn't help that an engine that is not fully broken in might experience excessively blowby creating some scary initial used oil analysis on the sub 20k mileage vehicles.

Redline MT90 and Amsoil MTG are the fluids to use if a GL4 75w90 is required.

Because of the higher power of the turbo 2.3L, and because of the lack of quality with certain transmissions and automakers these days, I would seriously consider reasonable 10-15k transmission fluid changes.

I'm right in there with you unDummy, it'll be every 15k miles for the trans services.

But I think I'll start out with trans oil changes every 8-10k for the first 25k miles or so until things settle down.

The Speed is going on a run to Bisbee, Az. this week. The round trip will put about 2500 miles on the car at which I will change the oil again ( the car got the FF changed at 1000 miles) and drop the FF in the trans.

I would do it before going but I'm waiting for the MT90 to get to the house (had to mail order it) and, if you can believe this, I am also waiting for the crush washers for the trans fill/drain plugs. Seems the neighborhood Mazda dealer has never ordered them before. As a matter of fact, when I told the parts guy that I had already changed the engine oil and was planning to change the trans oil, he was aghast!! Obviously not a bitoger...

For the speed3, do this...

...it fixed my issue w/ 1st and 2nd grinding. It's a simple fix, takes about 1 minute total, no tools required.
