Please add details, I've never heard of such a thing. My motorcycles see redline frequently... but they're much more fun than their 4-wheeled counterparts.
Sounds like a good way to increase wear.
How about the inverse...redline a few times, every day
Well some people are content to loaf around in pickup trucks. And that doesn't make any sense to me.
After 70k of this, nothing happened yet. Actually may be running better than ever. At 190k now. I'll let everyone know when she blows. Don't hold your breath.

Don't worry about it. Just drive your car how you want to. It won't die if you don't do that and it won't if you do...

Keeps your plugs from fouling.
For my car I'm pretty sure it was in reference to keeping intake valves clean.
Don't get me wrong... I go WOT on the 5.0 every day. However, you are kidding yourself if you think driving around bouncing off the rev limiter all the time is helping your engines health.
I wasn't exactly speaking of doing redline every single acceleration...I was mainly asking if anyone knew if there was truth to the argument. They say if you take an old grannys car, it runs like crap because they never give it WOT to burn all the gunk out of the engine. Give it the Italian tune-up and it runs smoother.
I must say that when I first found this board I was suprised that the cars that are driven hard dont always get worse UOAs. I would say regular maintenance is more important than driving habits. I have always driven my cars pretty hard and havent blown a motor yet.

As long as the oil is at operating temperature when you do it, and you've got the right oil and the right oil filter choices for your engine, I don't think you'll end up with too much wear at all.
I go full throttle as often as I can and these latest results don't look bad at all:

I redline the Lycoming in the Cessna for every takeoff, all the way to 2550 rpm.
Nothing wrong with a good 'Italian' tune up once in a while!

I ask because I want to assume that I have some gunk from winter, winter idling, and me going super easy on the gas pedal in cold weather.
Also, is anyone here going so far as to say there is no link between amount of time above yellow-line and wear metals?
