I have a 91 BMW 318i that I had made a few posts about a whiney diff. Id tried conventional 85w-140, redline 75w-90, BMW/Castrol XJ 75w-140 all without improvement. I had gotten advice to check a few things that could possibly be the cause of the sound. I was also advised to change to schaeffers 80w-90.
My brother had some redline 80w-140 laying around. The brocheure for redline said that it was mainly for HD trucks, race apps where max power isnt necessarily important, or noisy LSD diffs where sound deadening is important. I figured that since he had some, Id try it.
Well, the diff still has a very slight trace of the whine sound, but it is nearly all muted. I drive about 10 miles, enough to heat up the diff (typically the sound will start after a half mile or so above 40 mph). No sign of the typical whine.
So it seems that the 80w-140 is the stuff to use if you have a whiney diff! It didnt smell as stronly of sulfur as most other lubes, including other redline lubes, of which Im pretty familiar. This stuff is supposedly 0.5% less efficient than the regular redline 75w-90. Ill take it!
Ill drive 40+ miles tomorrow and make sure the noise is pretty well gone. I hope so, itll make the enjoyment of driving the little BMW on trips so much greater.
