Redline 5w30

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I posted but wanted to ask a quick question.

I've got 10 qts. of Redline 5w30 from Advance Auto clearance & want to know what would be the best use for this stuff?

Should I run it in the wife's '04 Malibu & change it when the OLM reches 0% or wait until the car's out of warranty & run it longer, ignoring the OLM?

I would use it now, and change it according to the OLM. But that's just me. I don't build up a big "stash" of oil that may become "obsolete" (newer API revision).

Be happy you got it on sale and keep your eyes open for the next bargain.

I'd run it for 7-10K, or longer if suggested by the OLM.

Is the engine the 4-cyl or 6-cyl? I thought that the 4-cyl Ecotec only has the change engine oil light, but no percentage readout?

The engine's 3.5 v-6.

I'm not a big oil hoarder, either, LOL! Though it's hard to pass up a bargain!

i used the few qts pf RL 10/40 that I fot at AAP close-out as an additive/top-up oil during my last OCI with MC oil.

Run it 8000 to 10,000 miles and post a used oil analysis for us. Please.

Please update us on what you observe running the oil.

Thanks! I don't think the OLM would let me run it that far, considering the car is mostly a short tripper

dose redline actually change there formulation or do they just update the api ratings on the bottle? seems they just keep the same HD formula while the API rated oils change

I bet Redline has been far enough ahead of API standards that their formula always met or exceeded API.

If Redline is as good as I think it is, then maybe other oils are just now approaching Redline's level of performance.

I go through spells of sleepless nights every once in awhile. The best way with me is to either lift weights till complete muscle exhaustion,or to go run a few miles that evening.

I`ve tried otc sleeping pills,and all them just seem to make me feel like a vegetable the next day.

Did a 20 mile mountain bike trip yesterday. I normally have sleep problems but I was out before my head hit the pillow and I feel great this morning. Certain sleeping pills make me worthless the next day.

To the OP, run it to the OLM tells you to change it and congratulations on such a great oil.

MY AAP has never carried Redline. I would run it now and I would run it for 7000-10,000 or longer if OLM says longer. I often run Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 and to be honest I would run it at least twice as long as the OLM in the wifes Buick says. First GM V6's tend to be gentle on oil when they are not busy leaking coolant into the engine! Second it can easily go the distance. Redline can be run down to a TBN of 0 safely and this comes from Terry Dyson and Blackstone lab's!

Now traditionaly Redline is not the GM crowds favorite oil like it is the Toyota crowd. Most of this though comes from too many knuckle dragger's driving GM 's with zero impulse control! So even though people tell them not to waste their time doing a used oil analysis of the Redline oil in their car until they have ran it at least 3 OCI's like clock work they have to drop a sample any ways and then declare to the world that Redline is not a good oil for GM products!!!!LOL So as long as you know going in that it will take about 3 OCI's to see the results go for it! I will say this even though I know that Redline will protect any vechile sold in AMerica from excessive wear it traditionaly does not produce the trophy winning used oil analysis results in GM vechiles that it does in Toyota's.

I think it is because of a combonation of cheaper alloys used by GM from the aluminum to the steel's and everything in between combined with their more porrus surface finish. A GM aluminum casting is usualy light as a feather compared to it's volume and is as porrus as a piece of chalk. All these pours effectively increase the total surface area exposed to oxidation and cleaning. GM is also still useing a boat load of lead intheir bearing shells compared to it's competers and relys on bushing that are not full floating more then any other engine builder in the auto industry. COmbine all this together and you get more total oxidation for any high ester oil to clean out on a regular basis. I think that in time like after maybe 6 OCI's that a high ester oil would by then have all the porous oxidation laden parts stabilized and then we could begin to see even great used oil analysis in GM power plants with Redline. Bear in mind that many of GM's engine even their flag ship Corvette engines show high copper and other wear metals for the first 50,000 miles befoe settleing down and that is with oils that are prett much devoid of ester's so all we are seeing is actualy wear metals. In an engine like that high ester content would make it look even worse even though it was just oxidation being cleaned fromt he surface.


And for those GM fan's 50,000 miles is not break in wear and nothing under the hood or bolted tot he engine takes that long to break in! Even gears int he transmission and differential that are not lapped in are done finishing the machining process by 10,000 miles!

So just keep that in mind Redline is a great oil but will probably not turn in the best used oil analysis for this application.
