Redline 10w30, low mileage LS1 :(

Going from Redline to Mobil 1 in an LS1 would be a big step backwards, IMHO.

If Redline doesn't work out, try Amsoil next.

"Really unbalanced?? pls explain...s "

Sprintman, We are seeing a bottom end (including pistons) out of balance issue that is influencing the bearing and thrust washer wear that is evidenced early on by tapping noises. I do not see alot of wrist pin wear though.

The copper elemental readings are consistant among the engine line with very few excpetions.

I think Patman said it here a while ago and that is GM is attempting to match parts like say Honda does so a engine is essentially perfectly balanced without specialty "bluprinting or machining". IMO the production quality is just not that tight and the experiment is flopping with the LS1 and other modular engines based on reports we are seeing. Hopefully GM is "tightening"

that issue up.

Maybe someone with a digital camara, a computer ,and a internet connection can address this issue and expose the GM perpetrators for what frauds they are !!!!

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I would like to see a manufacturer state something like. For this particular engine if you do UOA and you get 50 ppm of lead for a 3000 mile (or corresponding interval) consistently the bearings may last approximately 150,000 miles. If the results are 25 ppm the engine may last 200,000 miles. SInce the composition of the bearings or other components vary by engine; trend analysis is great, but we have no concept of longevity based upon the numbers we see in UOA.

It sure would be nice to know that 50 ppm of lead or iron at 3000 miles would still produce 150,000 miles as opposed to now, where we have no idea of longevity linked to wear.

This time, I put in Redline 5w30 and used the K&N filter, so we'll see what the next results look like - though I'm afraid to go beyond 4k miles after this analysis.

Did we ever get a follow up to this UOA with Red Line 5w30? Regarding the LS1, I see nothing wrong with it. It's a great engine.

Look at how low the TBN is on this one. It's a new engine, what is Red Line cleaning? Could it be taking wear metals and keeping them in the oil?

I'm not so sure adding a K&N filter is a good thing here. Most reports from this forum show to much getting by K&N filters, until they are close to needing cleaning, then when you should remove them for cleaning they are filtering great, too little to late for my vehicle. Just my thoughts, obviously you installed one allready, couldn't hurt to wait until your next UOA before deciding. Just how hard do you push this beast? Thanks for posting!

I do not think that he needs to change from Redline. I do not think that his numbers are high. I believe that they are normal for an LS1. At 10,000 miles, I was still getting metal shavings in my oil. I was assured by an LS1/LS6 expert that this was normal for this type of engine.
