Red vs Black Toyota oil

Hi everyone,

After some advice and doing some reading, I've come to the conclusion that it makes sense for me to use Toyota oil for my oil changes, specifically the Moly...

So I went to a dealer today, to get a quart to keep in my emergency tote I keep in the back of the car, and it was a red bottle. Research tells me that red is the older one, and if when I start to get black bottles at the dealer I get service at (not the same I bought from), I don't want to ever accidentally add two different oils to each other.

Should I return the oil to the dealer and get only the black bottle?

You can add two different oils to each other. It's one quart. Considering the gas you'd burn on the roundtrip, it's probably cheaper to throw it away.

Really, why don't you put it in the spare well in the trunk and forget you ever bought it. Chances are you'll never need it anyway.

Black bottle is the newer one. They probably gave you old stock because they have the 0w-20 in bulk now.

Interesting, I can just stick it in my father's garage, never to be seen again, and get the black bottle for my needs.

I have never had a Toyota leak or use oil. Use it in your lawnmower. You will never need it. Unless you underfill an oil change. But you can easily mix it with the new oil and your engine won't know the difference.

It is totally safe to mix those two oils, I would not worry about it.

Agreed. viscosity is viscosity.

I bought a case of red bottle on an ebay deal for $50 and use 4-1/4 qts. per change so if I can only get the black for the last change I'm going for it. By the way I'm getting much quieter starts in the 30F temps here and improved fuel economy on my commutes.
