Red Line 5w40

JAG, I'm being serious. There are so many RL reports on here. Zero leaks.. Where are they? I can see RL causing a leak in an old engine, but not a new one. Plus, I wouldn't have used it if it were a problem as anal as I am.

lets all face it iam hearing more and more from mechanics here in town that the new gf-4 formulations are seeing alot more wear on cams/lifters and sludging...so redline and other high zinc and phos. oils are a must!!!!...i use all redline and motul 300v mix plus a number of additives including sx-up

I'm talking about the gear oil, not motor oil. I should have been clear about that. Oil consumption differences are one thing, but having gear oil drip out of the transaxle seals and onto headers is a much bigger problem. It's hit or miss though. Not consistent among brands or models.

As soon as I run out of Syntec 5w40 and GC I will order some RL 10w40 and give it a go. Where can I find it cheapest?

Oh, my bad. I thought you were talking about the motor oil. Sorry abou that.

You calling it a myth is a myth! We've had this talk before. And it's not perfect for his car. It's excessively thick. I'm running Lubromoly 5W-40 (a thick, stable oil) in my VW 1.8T engine right now and it's sluggish. Trying many oils has shown that low 40 weights or high 30 weights are best, depending on oil consumption and mileage of engine. Sorry for ragging on ya but it's just plain misleading.

How did you get on the subject of gear oil?

I thought you were going to use RL 5w40? I would just buy enough for one oil change. Because if you go from GC to RL 5w40 or 10w40, your 2.0T may feel sluggish.

Yeah I was thinking of using 5w40 but as pointed out in the previous post 5w40 isn't really needed in my climate. I am hesitant to use 10w30 due to a vis of 10.7. Thats a good bit thinner than GC.

Maybe a mix of Redline 10W-40 and 10W-30 would do it?

Bear in mind that the Redline basestock may behave differently in bearings.

In this paper Redline 10W-30 is comparable to a petroleum 10W-40 and a Redline 10W-40 may behave more like a petroleum 20W-50.

My own experience in an '86 BMW 325es , is that Redline 10W-40 is smoother and quieter and runs better than Mobil 1 15W-50.

In our 196 VW Passat GLX VR6, Redline 10W-40 was smoother , quieter, ran better and showed lower oil temps than Castrol Syntec 5W-50 or Mobil 1 15W-50.

Mobil 1 15W-50 lists cSt @ 100º C of 18.0 versus Redline 10W-40 at 14.6.

As I recall, the RL 10w-30 has a high temp, high shear viscosity of 3.7 Cp @ 150C. So it's plenty thick for a VW/Audi turbo. The min spec to meet VW 502.00 is 3.5 Cp and there's a factor of safety associated with that spec limit.

I belive a chip would void it.

Many dealers are better now about the oil and use Castrol 5W40,at least around here they do.

Since we are both Colorado Rocky Mountain drivers, and face:

-the same snow and ice,

-the same sub zero to 100+ temps,

-the same mountain passes,

-the same high speed interstates,

-Denver bumper to bumper traffic,

-the same cursed mag chlor,

-and probably the same off road driving....

Which vehicles are you driving?

I agree with choosing Redline, it is the best stuff out there.

I wonder if a Front Range Redline group buy is possible?
