I was wondering what would be the best oil for my situation, in winter and summer, I was looking to possible curve the oil consumption some by switching oils, and maybe switching to 0w30 Mobil 1 oil for extra mpg because its on sale atm. I'd like to keep a good add package, and a good price point

.

1.Its a 1997 Honda Civic D16y7 5 speed with 200k miles
2.The owners manual recommends 5w30 API
3.I live in Minnesota
4.I drive it harder than that average DD and I take short trips, about 10 highway miles to work
6.Its a Honda and it burns about a quart every 1,000 miles

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't use M1 to curb oil consumption, that's for sure. I think you'd be best served by getting a quality conventional 5-30 and running it the Honda recommended 7500 miles or so. 10 miles isn't short, that's a good commute for a car. Plenty of good conventionals, Pennzoil Castrol Mobil 5000 motorcraft would all be great.

You're not going to save money putting a 6 dollar quart of oil in your car every 1000 miles, that's for sure.

Seriously, with that kind of consumption, whatever is cheapest.

Just keep it topped up.

If you insist on a rec., Maxlife 5w30 is a good High Mileage oil.

+1 on the maxlife, if that doesn't help with consumption try uping it to a 10/40

oh and with that kind of consumption i would go up to 8k ocis with it

Mobil 1 0w30 won't get you a significant increase in MPG. The extra money you spend for the Mobil 1 would definitely out weigh any gas savings. I am gonna have to agree with the crew on this...any conventional on sale at your local auto parts store or Walfart. In the recommended weight of course. I think 10w40 is too thick.

Even with the mileage and the fact that you drive hard, I still think that one quart every 1,000 miles might be indicative of a problem, and is slightly excessive. I completely understand that you are probably not looking to pull the engine apart enough to replace rings and rebuild valvetrain, but would absolutely check the PCV valve and valve adjustment. If the car is burning oil, time is not on your side and I see no downside to using the cheapest 5w30 oil you can get your hands on. On the other hand, if the PCV valve gets your consumption down to a quart every 2,000 miles or better, I would be totally down with using M1 (Edge Titanium is actually my favorite) or some other premium synthetic that you find on sale. Good luck.

Well the valve train sounds really clacky on it, so I'm assuming it does need to be adjusted, how much would that run me? and as for the oil, it is kind of self changing, lol, probably just swap Wix filters every now and then, and as for the PVC valve, I have one right now, just cant get to the valve, with the status of everything else on the car maintenance wise, I'm sure that is part of the problem..

I have been using what ever I can find to top it off, Pennzoil yellow top, napa oil, what ever store I'm nearest, the previous owner didn't do squat for 75k except change the oil, so I just got new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter, and fuel filter. waiting on the pcv valve and doing a transmission fluid change soon, and if the consumption does not change, probably get new rings and a re manufactured head for it.
