Just curious if there is any advice on what to do if oil consumption increases for your engine. The consumption level I'm referring to is well within limits but it has increased. My engine wouldn't use more the 1/4 quart in 3000 mile oil changes, but recently it's gone up to a full quart.
I've been using Mobil 1 10w30 for the majority of engine life = about 46,000 kms. Up to a couple months ago it never used much oil using Mobil 1.
Three oil intervals ago I tried Castrol Syntec 5w-40 and it seemed to darken really quick so I dumped it kind of early as it looked dirty. Two oil intervals ago I went back and was using Mobil 1 again, and it was consumed at a higher rate. This last oil interval was run on Redline 10w30 and it was consumed at the same rate. It all seemed to happen after running the Castrol Syntec, maybe a coincidence, not sure.
I'm due for an oil change this week, was thinking of trying Castrol 0w30 GC as it is a tad thicker viscosity. Should I try a thicker viscosity again such as GC or even a 40 weight , will that help with oil consumption ?. I'm also wondering if perhaps my rings got varnished up somehow, it is a turbo 4 cyl. engine and it does get a lot of heat in it under boost.
I'm probably worrying about very little since 1 quart per 3,000 miles is still within spec. I think I am also being spoiled with my minivan, as I just took a 4,000 mile trip on Mobil 1 10w30 and it didn't burn a drop the entire trip. So it makes my other car seem like a guzzler.
but any advice would help. thanks
