I'm just trying to save the guy from some high iron and copper wear numbers. 0W-20 and 5W-20 may
work okay for Honda and Toyota Prius engines, but for older Detroit engines, it doesn't do so well.

I would run the factory fill and filter for 5000 miles and then change to 5w20 synthetic and a quality filter such as PureOne. Since you are now driving it on a regular basis there should be no problem.

There is no need for the thicker oil in that truck unless you live in really hot climates and even then a 10w 30 would work fine but so would a 5w20. I dont think that the same engine with the same oil running 10w30 will last any longer than the 5w20 but thats just me...might as well try and get some extra MPG and even if you dont your using what is reccomended.

BTW "AFE" will not give you any significant improvement in MPG's. USE 5W20.

Don't agree.
Volatility is not an issue with any 0W-20 oil in a 20wt application.
The main advantage of the better 0W-20 oils has nothing to do with their extreme cold performance spec's but rather their higher VIs compared to 5W-20s. That means they are lighter on start-up at all start-up temp's. And that can be as much as 30% or more at room temperature and more than 50% at 32F.
And yes you will get better gas mileage with a 0W-20.

My advice to our new member is that there is nothing wrong with sticking with the spec' 5W-20 mineral oil for year round use, but if you want to up grade to synthetic oil go with a 0W-20.
