Wow thats crazy. A camry MSRP is $25k for the base model. Corolla $20k. Im sure the other makers and models are in the same ballpark, I just went to the toyota site...

Makes zero sense to buy a Korean econobox with 50-100k miles for $16k. I get it that those are carmax prices, but still...

She will be amortizing all sorts of pending repairs, mainenance, tires, etc. over a much shorter period.

The panther cars are all over the map. At least in my area, it seems like the nicer cars are less expensive. Found an '05 CV with <80k miles for $6k which I don't think is bad.
 
just like is mentioned already, Honda, Toyota or a Mazda

i'd stay away from Hyundai, Kia and some others; yes upfront you get the deal, but sometime down the road she may sell it, and the other brands do not mach Toyota or a Honda product; GL
 
I was able to get updated info. The totaled car was a 2018 Corrola. She is only finding high mileage ones in her price range.

Latest info is she totaled a 2018 Corolla. $16k sounds low in today's market for the car and there must not have been much of a loan on the Corolla. The answer is the best used Corolla she can find for her money or a new one and borrow a little. It's always hard to get back whole when a car gets totaled and probably worse now.

A $3k beater or a new car that the dealer is 100 miles away make no sense. Too many unknowns for the BITOG experts.
 
This is an older female so she just needs reliable. The Jetta is a little more expensive than a base Corrola which she liked. It was an uninsured driver that totaled her car. Would not be surprised if she was parked on the street when car was totaled. I am thinking a private sale Corolla would put her in her price range. Or as others have stated a small loan to make up the difference. Problem I am finding is their is very little inventory at all of the dealerships.

you are right the hyundai does not match those in warranty...
New Accent has 5year 60k/10year 100k warranty.

I didnt post what I would buy for myself I figured it was a Woman who has no car smarts since she was asking for help.
a new car with a long warranty is piece of mind. and they are available under msrp.

A used 4-5 year old one is still going for 75% of new.. not a deal..

I would 100% agree not to buy a 2 year old hyundai(or many others) with 30k miles for 2k off sticker price.. which is what the market is right now.

I still have an offer for my Jeep cherokee for 29500 3.5 years old and 51k miles on it.. Sticker was 38.5k but I paid 28.xxx~~ ish new
The market is suck.

Anyone suggesting a 10k corolla go find one... and that is if there isnt a line waiting to buy it.

I like the car too, but unless its like $5-8k with complete maintenance history, never been in the rust belt, and 1 adult owner, and you have a good private honda specialist nearby that isn't very busy most of the time, its probably not going to be as headache free as a new Elantra.... Also how well does it do on 87 octane?
Is yours a manual with a LSD? How much would you want for it?
